Happy Birthday Jim!
Any clue to why it broke? Me and Den each blew up a front diff doing donuts but we think that's because we left the center unlocked. Since locking the center we haven't broken a front diff. I think I recall you saying you always leave your center locked, is that right?
I took my tranny out three months ago to send out the broken KEP pressure plate but atlas it's still on my kitch table :frustrated:
Congrats on making enough power to eat 016's!! :-D

The diff was locked. Here's what I know. It broke while in 2nd gear. With the clutch engaged and the tranny in neutral, it rattles. When the car is rolling it clanks and sometimes catches at low speeds and stops the car like you slammed on the brakes. This happens regardless of what gear it's in and even if it's in neutral. The only time it doesn't make any noise is with the clutch pushed in and the car is at rest.
Anyone have an exploded view of an 016?

Sounds very similiar to when I broke my front diff. Try unlocking the center and see if it'll drive. LOL
Wasn't long after mine starting making those noises stuff starting falling out of it. Even still with no fluid and a 4 inch whole in the bottom I drove it for a month back and forth to work 40 mile (round trip).

That is awesome 8) After we blew my tranny we kept driving it around here and there, everyonce in a while a chunk of gear would start making a bunch of racket, but other than 4th and a hemmorage of fluid, everything else still worked.

OK I guess I should tell the story of it's final demise!! LOL
Since I broke the front diff it was essentially rear wheel drive and did nasty break stands with the rear diff locked. One day coming back from work I stopped by a shop where my buddy worked (still at least 17 miles from home). He had told his friend about the nasty burn outs and asked me to do one. I declined since I was so far from home but as I was leaving I stopped on the step hill and locked the rear diff. I mashed the petal and lit them tires right up slammed second, third and forth (for the first time). Upon engaging it into fourth the tranny just blew apart like someone threw a grenade into it. It cost me 100 bucks to get it towed home. :(
Moral of the story: Don't try to be cool 17 miles from home LOL!!!

Myke, reminds me of driving my 88 90q for about 3 months with a badly grinding third gear. Eventually on the way back from my GF's house the car stuck in fifth gear and wouldn't come out! Lemme tell ya, driving home was.. _interesting_. I could smell my clutch the whole way home!
here's the fun stuff that come out of the drain plug when I got home. You could even read the part number off the chunk, yep, 3rd gear syncro

Your story beats mine :-P

I wish!
I did however pull a good $10+ worth of change from under the seats/carpets!

Ok, LOL, I just got back from a spin around the parking garage. What an angry, angry tranny! I've figured out that is will not clunk while rolling, out of gear and with the clutch pushed in so at least I'll be able to roll down hills in silence. I picked up the replacement tranny yesterday, the plan is to try and get the car up to my buddies house about 15 miles away on sat morning and swap them out. Anyone who wants to bench press transmissions is free to stop by. :-D

Ok, the tranny is in and the car is running like a top. The drive up to the garage happend mostly in 1st and 5th since that's all I could easlily get to engage. After a few miles 2nd gear completely destroyed itself and the tranny quieted down alot. I'm not sure I'll pull it apart as I'm certain it was just 2nd gear that failed. Now it's time to make a dyno appointment for next weekend.
