What size lines did you end up going with? Are you running anything special as far as lines go? I was looking at the Earls Prolite 350 for mine since its better with alcohol fuels.

I'm actually just running a braided -6 line from the fuel filter up to some bulkhead fittings by the brake booster. I'm going to retain the stock return line. I was thinking about doing a hard line, but didn't feel like screwing with it.

SO does this mean the car will once again be faster by the time we get out there :-D ?

Good idea, stock return line is fine 8)

Needless to say I set a record for cleanup, it was kinda like Hank running to get the fire extingusher to put the fire out under his hood.

But did you get video of it like Hank did? Jim I was just following along this thread after writing Hank about Pikes Peak this weekend and you throw that line in. I gotta tell you, it made my day. I had to pull up the video again just to laugh some more. I would have liked to see the run from the flood action though.

After installing some larger fuel lines this weekend, I seem to have found enough fueling to reliably run the car at 32-33 psi :D I had it up there all day and was out trying to tune out one little blip I'd get on the knock light every now and then and CLANK!

Hmm, I know that sound, let's see what second gear feels like? Yep, gone again. Feck. At least this solved the problem of where to put the 016 tranny that I've had in the back of the red rocket for the past few months.

I'm very tempted to go 01E this time around, but finances dictate I throw in the spare and back the boost down to 27 psi. :( Anything above 29 is so freaken violent, these poor tranny's don't stand a chance. I really need to get the closed loop boost control in and get rid of the big spike of power that hits at 4800 rpms.

The real shitty part is I probably can't do the swap until Sat the 22nd, which happens to be the day before the NASA event in Pueblo. Hopefully I woun't have any issues. 8)

Doh! Well, breaking a tranny is always good (confirmation).

I've got some pretty good leads on 01E's, not real cheap, but real strong, Scott in TX has been putting up some smoking deals.

Yea, I think I'm going to try and make the 01E a winter project.

Dooo it, doooo it! i love the feel of the 01E's over the 016's anyway! So are gonna go with the six speed and cryo gears or what!?!!!?? :D

Jim,

Do you have any insights into why you have now broken two 016s at HP levels under Javad's 01A explosion? My understanding was that the 016 is stronger, not weaker. :?

How much stronger is the 01E? I thought S4 2.7tt guys are still breaking them???

So Jim I hope I'm reading this right. After installing bigger fuel lines your getting enough fuel for your #75's and you will not need to go with staged injection. Am I right? I'm hoping to go with E-85 if they ever make it avalible on the east side of Denver.

I believe the 01E's behind 2.7T are holding up to the power (damn few have Jimmy G's power though! ), however missing 1-2 shifts is wrecking the slider and 2nd gear engagement dogs.

Only thing guys with 2.7's are hurting are synchro's, trust me, the horrid abuse I've dolled out to my 01E has me convinced beyond a shadow of a doubt that its by far the strongest tranny Audi offers. We're talking HARD lapping at Laguna and full Anti-lag drag launches with hard shifting at 38psi.

Granted, my tranny is massaged by Stasis, meaning micropolished and cryo'd gears and upgraded, beefier hardened brass synchros.

016 #3 is in and running great. I decided to toss everything in the car and swap it while I was in the Springs visiting the family. I’m going to order up some Motul Gear 300 for this one, I think it has Valvoline GL5 fluid in it right now from the PO.

The failure on the 01A and both 016’s was to second gear. The 01A died from a hard shift into second. The 016's died after seing repeated second gear pulls at boost levels close to 30 psi. As far as the 016’s being stronger than 01A’s, I don’t know what to believe. They probably have their strengths and weaknesses in different areas.

The staged injection is on hold for a few reasons. The car is running great as is with the larger fuel lines, so why over-complicate it. I’m also committed to keeping the boost below 27 psi. to save the tranny. It’s a very small step back, but really, 500 hp on the street is PLENTY! I’ll eventually get an 01E in there and crank it up again, but this will just have to do for now. I want to take advantage of the rest of the summer and spend my money going racing :-D

We’re also going through a merger at work, and selling our condo, so new car projects are on hold right now because the next six months could be very interesting.

Don’t worry, I still want to get out to the strip one more time this summer, and back to the dyno if HAP ever wants to do some back to back runs. I'd like to do a street une pull and then 1 or 2 at max boost.

Now I just have to get all these B4 and RS2 body parts off to the painter

:-D

No I don't!

I've been thinking more, I blew up #1 at 29 psi on pump gas. #2 went at 33 psi on E85, I've been running around for a while at 28 psi on E85 with no problems, which is much more powerful than 29 psi on pump gas. Now I can't really say if it will survive below any certain boost level.

I think I'll concentrate on boost control and softening the power curve a little. A little less initial boost and a little more on top would might just do the trick.
