This is what I was thinking, the reservoir is probably unnecessary.

Thanks guys!! I lose interest, as in everyone's life things get busy and then I get to enjoy the opportunity of not only driving a fun car, but driving one on a great stretch of road without any traffic. It wasn't just two days earlier on Monday morning that I made the same drive just putting on miles where I could load up the engine without any trouble, that I saw seven HP troopers from one side to the other. The stretch can't be but about 20miles is all so you can see that I hit a rare drive. :o It had the feeling of hitting a midweek storm that just dumped two feet of new Utah Powder and having the mountain to yourself skiing uncut runs with powder to your waist all day!! I just wanted to start whooooping on each corner while driving. 8) :D

I think being able to organize a GTG hillclimb would be pretty difficult to pull off if not impossible, but it would be fun!!

I guess is what I need to do now is get out into the garage today and fix my leaks. I think one of the water manifold o-rings is seeping and gets worse as temps get to the fan running side of things. The oil is either a front main seal or the oil pump. I tend to think pump since, if you recall, I had a pump installed and then changed it out for one with a idler. I probably used the same gasket since it hadn't been heat cycled and possibly left something loose. :( The car is running too well to let it go to long and it kills me to have everything getting all messy.

Thanks Sean. I was going to come down to cars and coffee last Saturday, but I was still blowing a bunch of smoke, didn't idle too well, and had family in town. Before I start cranking up the boost, I'd like to do a few pulls with you and that stock WX. I'd like to see if I'm still pulling as hard as stock from start to say 3300rpm or how I do on sub 3k roll ons. It seems pretty slow, but I suspect it might be more of the sudden on boost kick that makes offboost seem anemic.

Did I tell you I ran into a guy a few weeks back while getting gas that seemed genuinely baffled at seeing two Mars Red Urqs in the same week. :o Not only did he know what they were, but was pretty excited about it. He told me he saw the other one at Cars and Coffee parked right next to a bright red Integrale. LOL He was surprised when I told him there was a Helios blue and a black Urq in town also!! It was fun running into him.

The car sounds great John. I'm jealous.

Did you get the EFR yet? I know some are floating around, but not certain if certain models are still not fully released. The 7064 (or even a 7670 :D ) has me intrigued to say the least...

Brandon did this to his URQ, and I imagine he kept the oil cooler in the OEM location. Another option for the oil cooler is just put one where the aux radiator is.

There is another setup I was looking for but couldn't find of a much wider one that is slanted back more towards the tire. It looked like quite a bit of intercooler.

Yeah its not as good as the 951 IC felt - but its better than stock - and I needed to keep AC and hated that relocation bracket. IC is one of my weak spots, too. Won't do a big FMIC...

Oh and yes I have the [RR] oil cooler in stock location.

Car sounds GREAT John.

Thanks Chris. I still haven't received the EFR 7064 that I ordered. I'm about ready to take my money back after this Christmas. I could use the money about now.

Guys, I have to say I'm getting pretty attached to the tube header. I'd love to see what the EFR would do, but I may have to see if I can find another tube header for the other car so that I can keep them alike. They are both Mars Red after all.

Sean that's just not true. I'm planning on taking the rear subframe off for the other car when I do the rear control arm bushings and solid subframe mounts. It's dirty and I know where a seam welded, bead blasted and then painted subframe is. :P Besides that I've already taken off the front subframe from this car to use on the other car.

Aaron, we need to talk. It sure seems like an AWIC would be a potential solution. How much radiator would you need for a 500hp application do you suppose. Anyone? Would pressure drops across both a small air to air AND a AWIC negate what would be gained in extra cooling? Just asking for opinions?

Didn't have the hart to tell him you are building another one

Yea I just let that one slide and settled for just four Urqs in town. I figure His Urq needs to at least have suspension and be a roller before I can count it.

I decided that since the car was running so well that I needed to address the water and oil leaks. I thought that by replacing the water manifold to turbo water line that I had taken care of the water leak, but it was still leaving a puddle anywhere I went. Upon closer inspection it was determined that one of the orings in the water manifold was leaking. If you remember right I machined the holes for this head as it started out as a 7A head. I figured that the holes were just a bit off and maybe they are, but when pulled I found that one of the orings had been cut while installing. Because getting to the water manifold entails pulling the intake, I decided to take the opportunity to pull the valve cover and retorque the head studs.

The intake pulled with all fuel lines, injectors, throttle body, and wiring harness still intact. It worked out rather nice.
Image

I used blue silicone along with the orings this time around. I figured that the extra lube the silicone would provide while installing would help prevent cutting a ring and would hopefully make for a better seal. I installed the manifold and let it set overnight before filling with antifreeze and running.
Image

Pulled the cover to find a still very clean valve train with no apparent problems, but found that the halfmoon in the front of the head that is part of the gasket looked like it could have been leaking. It had a small amount of oil under the seal. I really didn't want to tear into the oil pump so instead decided to silicone the half moon while reinstalling the cover and put it back together and see what happened.

Image

Put it all back together and proceeded to put on another 400 miles. I think that I have stopped both leaks!! The water completely and the oil seems like it might still be seeping, but I'm not sure if it isn't just accumulation still dripping down even though I have tried to wipe everything best I could.

I should have taken a picture with the oil dripping. 500 miles had oil dripping off the pan, alternator, oil filter and housing, oil cooler and just about everything back to the downpipe. It cleaned up pretty good, but I'm hoping the leak is fixed and residue is what I'm now finding.
Image

It seemed so nice to be able to park and not have oil and antifreeze leaking that I took the car down to Cars and Coffee with Sean and Sean. We had a spot where the Helios blue Urq was in the middle of two Mars red Urqs. I thought I had taken a picture, but couldn't find it. Thanks guys!! I had fun.

Nice. IME, I have always put silicone under and on top of the half moons, and also on al the corners where the seal goes over the cam caps and such. Most of these leaks end up on the bottom of oil temp sensor in the oil pump, again, IME. You may still have some coming down behind the metal TB cover(the back one).

Exactly!! You don't know how often I checked behind the backing plate however. When the turbo water line sprung a leak, I had a lot of time trying to fish the new line through to look for or notice oil. I siliconed in the halfmoons on the back of the head, but they weren't part of the gasket. I still didn't silicone the corners or over the front cap. If it still is leaking that will be my next place to look.

Looks awesome John, I'm glad it is up and running. My 84 is also out of the garage and has been plated. I did the engine break-in drive over the holidays and accumulated the next to-do list for the car. I do have a few questions for you.

No front sway bar, rally style or just haven't got to it yet?

Old school WX dual oil filters, any special reason?

Al subframe mounts, I've got them but haven't installed. What are your thoughts on these from a NVH and handling point of view?

How did you get the a/c radiator(condenser/evaporator I can't remember) to fit so nicely with the cooling system radiator? I'm running the dialynx radiator and its so tight in there between the radiator and a/c compressor, the a/c radiator is rubbing on the a/c compressor bracket. Any tips on fitment here?

Keep the updated coming.

Do you guys think that I'm going to feel better about dumping oil and antifreeze all over my engine bay if you keep telling me how clean it is? Well it does help, but still I don't like that I will never be able to wipe the oil out of the cracks and tight spots. :( Oh well it's a driver now, not another garage queen like some of the Vegas Urq's I know. :D I'll bet I've put more miles on this car since Christmas than either of the Sean's did all year in their cars.

No front sway bar, rally style or just haven't got to it yet?

I purposely left the front sway bar off to fix the oil and water leaks. I figured one less thing to be in the way and clean. Now that I have ran it about a thousand miles and some of that pretty aggresively, I'm thinking I kind of like the turn in I get without it on. It seems like it doesn't push as badly in the corners as it used to, but then it could also be the solid mounted subframe and delrin control arm bushings helping out there. I will probably put it back on now that the leaks are under control and at least see how it handles.

Old school WX dual oil filters, any special reason?

I had originally installed a single filter housing out of an MC or 7A. It was all bead blasted and cleared of course, but when I went to install the oil cooler I realized that the cooler line fittings were smaller than what was on the housing. I couldn't just swap fittings and looked a bit for some adapters, but in the end I cleaned, blasted, and clear coated the original Urq housing and put it back in place. The oil cooler, lines, and location are all stock Urq.

Al subframe mounts, I've got them but haven't installed. What are your thoughts on these from a NVH and handling point of view?

I worried about the same thing....mainly NVH noise. This is after all Her Urq. :D I have always wanted my wife to at least take a trip in it with me if not drive and take ownership. I know that coming from her B7 S-line, she is going to think the Urq is loud. In reality it's not bad. :o It did pick up some NVH, but it's way livable in my book. Again it's hard to say how much handling was improved, because I replaced the control arm bushings with delrin at the same time. Between the two the front end is much tighter and because the delrin was so tight, it feels like it is a stiffer front end also. I think that is partly why I don't mind the sway bar missing. We did have a conversation at cars and coffee about the solid subframe mounts with an old german man that runs a local VAG shop. He didn't have much good to say about them saying that everytime Dick brings his 2.7tt Urq in the subframe bolts are loose and needing attention. All four of the urq's there that weekend are running the solid mounts and I think I can speak for both Seans that we all like them. I will make sure I give them a few once overs now and again however.

I am running the Ron Davis radiator that was a very nice plug and play piece. It was tight getting everything in place, but fits very nicely once there. I running the original York compressor and brackets up front, but although tight, it still has about a half inch between the compressor bracket and the condensing coil. My biggest headache was getting the low side A/C line along with the hydraulic pump lines to fit between the radiator and the 3B manifold. It's pretty tight there and could probably stand to have longer custom lines made to come below the intake. I have yet to get the A/C running, but intend to at least see what it will do before going to a more modern rotary compressor. I want to get idle control working before I even try to cycle in an A/C compressor. My to do list is getting as long as the original swap almost. LOL

I am about at 900 miles since starting up this engine and have decided to up the boost a bit. I was always going to control boost with the IIc and will eventually go that way, but in the mean time I installed a manual boost controller. Notice how well I have utilized the bracing shelf from the strut tower to the firewall. :D I got a lot of people telling be to cut it out and I almost did, but it has worked out well for both my FPR and now my boost controller.
