So as it's starting to get a bit warmer here I am noticing that my coolant temps are getting a bit too hot. It only seems to be happening at highway speeds 60mph+ and the coolant temp will start creeping up and yesterday made it to 109C. This doesn't seem correct to me and I am not sure what would be causing this. It's at 14.7ish AFR, timing is around 35-37 degrees at cruise, new water pump and thermostat. The cooling fan acts a bit funny from time to time and I think it may need to be replaced at some point (draws a lot of current) but it works. Not to mention at a highway speed the fan should not be necessary especially for a 55 degree (ambient) day.

First though was possibly a bad head gasket but the oil and coolant aren't mixing and there's no smoke.

I crank the heat and it goes right back down to 93Cish.

Any ideas?

Nice man! Welcome! This place is badass for all of your technical and go-fast needs. Stance and things of that sort...not as much, lol. What are your plans for the 90?

DD it until my Integra is gone. Then a GTX30r set up on the 90 haha. Hopefully all in time for H20i. I have to check out the 200 at some point to see what I'm in for.

Anyone have an idea about the overheating issue? Faulty new thermostat/water pump?

Thats weird man, my car stays cold when driving on the highway unless its 90+ degrees out in which case it still never really gets to the middle thick temp mark on the gauge. My fan also never comes on on the highway. Only thing I can think of is some kind of blockage. Either bad t-stat, bad w-pump, rad is clogged, etc. Its hard to say what it might be though...

The problem is only at highway speeds...which makes less sense. Lol.

Not too long. Seems like 5 minutes or so at around 65mph on a 55 degree day with the hvac off.

The fan does come on but it seems like maybe the low speed does not. Either way, at highway speed the fan should not be necessary. Especially on a cool day.

Exactly my thoughts. Ive heard, but have not experienced, that having the fan on at higher speeds can actually block air to your radiator and cause it to get hot...

Does anyone sell a lower temp thermostat?

it has to be a faulty thermostat, blockage or water pump issue. Even a hot thermostat will not behave like that.

Is it possible that there is still some air that needs to be bled out?

I haven't done any troubleshooting as of yet and I can't rule out that there is no air in the system. Is there a special procedure to purge air from these coolant systems?

there is usually a vent on the highpoint (cant recall where they are on the t44) Maybe in the top of the rad, maybe in the coolant hose to the heater core. I loosen the clamp on a heater hose and rev the car a bit until no more air comes on out my 90's.

There is no way you need a colder t-stat. Mine stays TOO cold on the highway anytime its below like 75 degrees here.

I'll take a look at the service manuals and see if there is any specific procedure on filling/bleeding the coolant system and ensure that there's no air in there. The pump and thermostat are brand new from GAP so I know they're quality parts (doesn't necessarily mean they aren't bad) but the chances seem slim.

I'm missing the upper shroud between the radiator and the radiator support but it hasn't been there since I've owned the car.

The first thermostat I installed in my '90 200TQA only lasted 6 months. So I'm thinking either thermostat, or a blockage. When's the last time you flushed your cooling system? When I flushed mine, all KINDS of nasty came out of that thing! And it runs cooler now, and the after-run system doesn't have to come on as much as it used to.

I changed the thermostat/water pump/coolant when the engine was out in January of this year. Most of the cooling system was pretty much emptied being that the car was all apart. I did switch to G12++ rather then G11...
