Looks like you have a full weekend ahead of you. I'll try to break away if I can and give you a hand if only for a few hrs. Don't fret if it doesn't happen, obviously hank is the first choice since he has had his hands all over your car junk, but if you run into problems and can't get to it by then, I have a few other friends that can tig. We'll get er done one way or another. Steve has my downpipe right now as I have been fixing my exhaust leak. I diddnt feel I needed to overwhelm hank when he has so much on his plate already.

Was making good progress. Tranny in, drive shaft in, axles on, block in and then Hank called. He gave me the wrong transmission. I have the broken one. :frustrated:

Oh bummer. Pretty much all of your work has to come out then. Do you have to pull the good 01e out of Hank's car before you can install it in yours? Were you planning on Pike Peak Darin?

Darin, while I am sorry for the trans mix up, calm down man! There are usually hangups. My car was running at 7pm and now is back to the head pulled on the bench with the oil pan off! Part of playing with high up audis!

Oh I am. Like I said, it's better this way. It was too big of a rush to get it done and that would lead to more problems. As always, you've helped a ton Hank, so no big deal. I was just trying to delay your departure. :-)

On Saturday I went down to Hank's and picked up the other transmission. Hank had quite the weekend. Between my transmission mix-up, his engine, and a shipping problem, he was having a rough go.

We discussed in length the current transmission in my car. When he bought it, the previous owner seemed to think something was wrong with it and swapped transmissions. When he got the new on in, it had the same problem as the old one. Something was done to the linkage and the new transmission worked so Hank is, and I quote, 80% confident the transmission is good. I can shift into all the gears so it's possible it could be.

So, the plan is the put the car together and try it. If it works, great, if not, then it's removing it the harder way. Worth a go.

Well, if it is bad, I can help you rebuild it. I've been in to several audi transmissions.....

Re: Darin's 80tq...slowly...

Post by Audilard »

The progress is slow, but steady. I'm still not certain the transmission is good since the shift linkage needs to be modified again. I think it's best to cut the linkage, attach to the shift rod, and then weld it back on. It's too picky to do it any other way. The list is long and the time available to work on it is scarce, but I try to do something to it each night. It's been so long I can't remember how some of it went together, namely the power steering pump mounting and the a/c compressor.

It looks good though.
