quattro87 wrote::woowoo: :woowoo: Way to go Ben. It looks like things are looking up for you and the car. With enough luck to not have bent valves, I'd say you're doing well. Either something found its way down between the timing belt cover or possible you may have an 016 pulley on with 7a 20v everything else? The offset is a bit different and will let the belt walk out. Otherwise it looks great. Congrats.

Thanks John!!! :) As for the pulley, its just the stock one that came with that engine. I never did much mix'n matching between the JT and such. Still, I count today as a big success, I drove it and avoided really breaking it!

On a side note: I couldn't stop thinking about it so I ran down to the shop and shined a flashlight down the lower timing cover and it looks like something took chunks out of the cog. :/ SO I am going to be needing a cog and a belt at the bare minimum. I will pull it apart tomorrow and post pictures of the carnage.

Alright, here's the damage. Needless to day, a loose bolt inside a timing cover is NEVER a good thing. I guess this is what I get for working on it at 3am in the morning. HAHA

The offending bolt...

The dark hole whence it came...

and the belt...

You have to be feeling really lucky. $100 for a hardened cog and some $$ for a belt is so much better than new valves, tear down etc!

Wow, that's nuts! I'm gonna be putting my timing belt cover on VERY EARLY in my build! lol

Too many horror stories, or close to horror stories. Like Guruman's $$$$$ motor gone.

Yuck. I think Marc's new CF timing cover is going to have to go on mine. I would be beyond pissed if something like that ruined my engine!

You know, I actually don't run the upper or lower. If you don't run the upper, it is a huge risk that something will get pinballed into the lower guard and then it can't escape till the belt is gone. If you don't run the lower, I suppose a piece could lodge into the cog and try to get sucked through the gear.

I have too much intercooler to put the covers on, plus I like seeing the tension of the belt on a weekly basis, along with the cam gear accessibility.

I also run sans covers and prefer it.

Its funny. When I moved up to Idaho, I had never heard someone calling soda "pop". I actually had to ask what the hell they were talking about. I always called it soda...
