Well, we were *hoping* that this turbo would be capable of 30R spool. We didn't really know exactly how much the stroker+quickspool would affect it. But the WSV makes an absolutely huge difference in spool (which, I believe, is due to the turbine housing being too big... but I'm not 100% on this).

As I mentioned in Ed's thread, there may be a bit of gain cranking the WG spring down as it's currently backed all the way out. This might give us a few hundred RPM, or it might give is nearly nothing, not exactly sure. This build has been a huge learning process, so we still have to iron everything out.

But basically, as Ed said, this turbo is massive. If the graph was showing 500whp/tq, would you still be saying the same thing?

I wasn't being critical. I was making a point based on faulty information. Since the turbo size misunderstanding is cleared up I'll go back into the woodwork and watch what happens with the QSV.

Being critical is good :) No offense taken at all. Trust me, I looked at all the stroker threads I could find, Neil's being one of them (over and over) to figure out how we should piece this build together. It's tough working with unknowns, especially when you're not a superguru like some of the guys here.

One thing to consider is that this turbo isn't even close to its efficiency at 26psi and as Ed said, its quite a bit bigger than a 35r. I would bet that at 36-38psi or so with timing tuning and some good fuel this turbo would put you in the high 600 whp range.

Matt, if you guys really only wanted 450-500 whp then maybe a 35r or even something between a 30r and 35r would be appropriate.

I don't think its about "only wanting" if he "only wanted" 450/500 who he could have just stayed with the short deck block.
Building a strikers is about torque!
To many build threads with monster HP numbers and very little torque. Let's change that.

You know what I meant. Noone quotes torque figures when talking about turbo sizes typically.

Sorry Ron, but to be fair, my "monster hp number" 2.2L engine made 512WTQ at 5200RPM. That is about twice what any of your 4.2L would make NA. I am not building a stroker for torque, but rather to lower the powerband so I can be less abusive on oil pumps, lifters, exc.

As for the turbo on this car, It is slightly larger than the 35r, but the exhaust housing looks too big for the purpose of the car. You may gain some top end with that large of an AR, but it is pretty standard information that you can make 700whp on a .82 housing with little effort. The hta3794r is a good example of that, as they are running over 850whp through that .82 modified 35r housing. I would find a way to get a .82 divided housing on that car asap. The AR on the small side will decrease a bunch, and help with overall spool while both open will provide enough flow to get up to 700whp easily. The spec on that turbo do show it being an honest 700whp turbo, but I do think it will be in the 38psi range like a lot of the other turbos in that size bracket. Size obviously does not tell the whole efficiency story, but a lot of these wheels are pretty close to being of the same branch.

It will be interesting to see how my car spools with a 2582cc 20vt on the hta3582r compared to this Comp setup.

:stupid: Comp doesn't make a divided .82 housing for this turbo, next size down from that 1.0 is .70...but I think Marc told me ATP or someone like that does make a .82

Yes, this is the housing: http://www.atpturbo.com/mm5/merchant.mv ... gory_Code=

Only thing is that Comp wants us to send the turbo to them so they can make it all fit together. Guhhhh.... although to be honest the car isn't driven that much :(

So today we tried tuning the WG spring to see if we could gain any boost response that way. Nope. With boost control off, we gained about 20kpa worth of boost with the WG spring screwed down 6-8 turns. But absolutely no difference in spool.

So we called Brady when we got home to see how much tuning needs to be done before/after changing turbine housings. After two hours (!!!!!!!!!), we concluded that it's basically impossible to say. With that in mind, we also discussed whether a .82 housing would be a limiting factor in terms of power, and we concluded that it isn't because of the limitations placed on us by pump gas. We should reach the same power on the .82 that we would on the 1.0 on pump with water/meth. With that out of the way, we finally called Comp and told them to go ahead and order the .82 divided T3 housing.

Turbo ships out to Comp tomorrow :)

sweet. good decision. based on other built cars, .82 will not be a restriction...

I bet the spool will be *awesome* with the .82 and QSV

I think part of what made us go 1.0 (besides Comp saying there was no other option) was that with the Supras (3.5L?), they were running GT42R or 45Rs with 1.0 hotsides. Duuuh... should have done some appropriate scaling. Anyway, after this it's off to see Brady.

Not yet, he was putting it off because of the monthly meet in TO. But Dad decided to just get another turbo. 6465 still, just with less downtime. Should be here next week (hopefully).

So he bought a whole new turbo and the only difference is the .82 hotside? Silly, but I guess it's good to have a spare on the shelf :)

He figures he'll be able to sell it or could eventually swap it to the .82 and then sell it. It's just easier to do it this way (plus no downtime), and Comp were good on the pricing.

Anyone want to buy a 6465 - your choice of turbine housing - for $1300?

Yeah I think we'll go the weekend that the turbo goes in. So if it comes next week, it'll go in right away, then we have to put W/M injection in and we're off.

I guess we'll have to call Brady again to set up a date!

And then after that we'll be heading down to Cayuga for a track day! We should have lots of new media. What tracks are around MTL? We could go, dyno/tune, and then hit the track.

Can I confirm did comp have the turbine in stock or did they buy from ATP and then put it on your new turbo?

I ask becasue they actually have a t3 divided housing with .86 in their online catalogue

Hey Jamo, not sure where you found that in their catalogue, I just went through it and I couldn't. What page?

But no - they don't make a divided T3 smaller than 1.0AR. We've spoken with them numerous times, I think if they have one they'd have told us by now! lol. So it's the ATP 35R housing that they mated to their CHRA/turbine wheel.
