and Nuugen, I don't need no adapter plate when I'm gettin a custom manifold! Hank will make that shit for me ;)

Hank, TPS comes with it? That'd be aweome. I know it wouldn't be a problem with the SEM which is super duper nice.

It does not come with it, but they are fairly cheap last time I looked at around 30 dollars.

I know Q45's came with 89 or 90mm TB's but I want 75. Bigger is not better. I think they may have come in 75mm too.

I'm going to the junkyard tomorrow and hoping to pick up some mint B5 A4 seats and go searching for TB's with my calipers lol.

Well I had a very successful day at the junk yard.

My first priority was picking up these B5 A4 seats that I saw there the other week. They are near perfect and I'm not sure whether I'm going to sell them or use them in the 90. Its probably more work than its worth. I dunno. I couldn't pass them up for the price though.

Image

After that, I was on a mission to find a good-sized throttle body. I looked at everything. Jaguars, BMW's, other Audis, Fords, LS1's, Cadillacs, etc.

The BMW V8 looked promising. It started at 70+mm, but tapered down to something in the mid to high 60's and had a HUGE flange on it.

Jags (6 cyls) have really large intake tubing on them but then taper down to like 60mm inside the TB :slap:

Fords were all too small. 65mm and below. I checked 4.6's, 5.0's, even a thunderbird SC.

Chevy was promising with their Vortech 6's, but they were weird and then I came upon a Northstar Cadillac which had a decent-sized one on it. Too bad it used some huge torx that I neglected to bring along. My flat heads weren't up to the job of getting them out the ghetto way either.

Finally we decided the junkyard down the street (like 500 feet away lol) would be a good place to try next.

Well right off the bat I found something I am always looking for at the jy...the ever sought after M50 manifold!!

Image

I just found one last week (the one pictured above) and sold it by Friday for a profit of $60. This is my third one. First one went on my dad's 328 :)

That soaked up at least an hour of my time (lack of tools and crappy location of nuts and stuff on the car), but meanwhile my dad was searching for potential TB's for me. He knew to look for things like Q45's, anything with a big, exotic V8.

So after I got the manifold off we went searching and right off the bat I spotted a nice lexus LS400 with the 1UZ V8. Throttle body was in place and looked nice and big :)

I ended up taking it home for a decent price and its a complicated sucker. I think it should be doable though. Its 75mm coming in and does a very long, slow taper all the way out the back to just about 70.5mm. Perfect. Its got a bunch of crap on it that I'll probably try to eliminate, but it has a nice provision for an idle valve which I might utilize...and some nice vac line ports too. The only thing missing is a TPS which I need to track down. They might me a little pricey unfortunately :(

Anyway, here it is and here is another one thats nice and decked out...I think I'm going to go for the latter look ;)

one thing I forgot to mention was that there was this x-type jag in one of the junk yards. It was completely stock everything. 6-cyl, stock body, stock everything...but it had a roll cage in it and texas plates. The only thing I can think of is that it was a test car of some kind. I thought that was super cool.

I started polishing the throttle body and took a bunch of crap I dont need off of it. I'm not sure if I want to have one of those throttle return damper things or not but there were two on there and I took them both off for now. I also took one random spring off and I'm going to cut a bunch of unneeded material off tomorrow too. Don't think I want that little casted-in vacuum routing thing. What the heck is that there for anyway? So weird. Something I will keep is that idle valve provision though. Seems like a great fitting to replace with a -10 AN or something...I dunno. All I know is I don't want no damn rubber on my intake tract!

Anyone object to any of these ideas?

I also don't know whether to run the throttle cable on the firewall side or the front-of-the-car side of the manifold routing. Its going to be roughly in stock location. I also need to figure out how to get the proper ends on the throttle cable, but I'm sure that will be relatively easy to figure out.

Oh and one last thing I've been neglecting mentally...I gotta have a plan for how to block off coolant feed and return when I put the Holset on. I guess I could just crimp both or shove something in there and put a hose clamp over it. I did that with my last turbo build lol.

On the return side, you can either take out the freeze plug that has the nipple in it and pop a regular one in there, or simply use a rubber cap/hose clamp. On the feed side off the water manifold, you just need a short fine-thread cap bolt/copper washer. My buddy found the specs on such a bolt i will ask him 2mrw...

I like giving you guys the details right down to the bolts. Pretty obvious that I'm bored lol.

Got my nice, new Holset dp flange and stainless hardware for that. Then after looking for my new 38mm wg flange for about an hour banging my head against the wall, I finally found it and got some nice allan hardware for it. Hex bolts are way too tight on there to get a socket or wrench on. Also lock washers for all of it. ~$17 for bolts and washers. FML lol.

Image

That leaves me with NOTHING to buy for this to go down on Friday except for some elbow grease.

Check list for when I head to the shop Friday:

(feel free to add to this if I'm forgetting something)

The hot stuff

-Turbo, manifold, and wastegate, downpipe flange, wg flange, some extra wg piping/maybe some random 3" steel bends for dp modification, and all hardware for bolting said items together.

-lots of RTV copper gasket maker for all of the gaskets because I believe in it more than real gaskets

The oily stuff

-oil feed and return lines with all necessary fittings to go from turbo to block, oil filter housing, etc.

The cold stuff

-IC piping, Hargett QDC's with o-rings, treadstone core

-nice silicone vac line for the wastegate and misc.

and I think that honestly takes care of everything for this Friday...seems like its all there from turbo inlet to downpipe.

Its just stainless high grade m8x1.25 hex bolts. As long as its TIGed it they shouldn't interfere with anything. If we decide to quick and dirty MIG it, there may be problems with the bolt head being too close to the weld for wrenched in which case I'll buy some more allen head ones or something I guess. Is that what you wanted to know?

oh hell no lol. Not for the downpipe. The downpipe bolts don't need to be anything special.

The nuts on the manifold to turbo connection are where issues happen. I have those military $5 a piece ones on there. Should hold up or I'm gunna be pissed lol.
