I just noticed the jetta seats.

I have a set up in my buddies attic that are waiting to come home and get installed in my 4000.

What did you need to do to get them in??

hey guys :)

i've been really busy lately with life. my sister got married, i've been to canada for a fishing trip, lots of work, etc. the car's been sitting but it should get some more attention soon. i've got a few slight changes in the plans i need to iron out before i go too much further at this point though. as usual though, i'll update when i've got some more good stuff 8)

time for another little update. i've been super busy over the summer and my trips to CA have been short, so hence little to no work on the car. i got tired of looking at my upper strut mounts unfinished, and not as adjustable as i'd like... so i went and bought some ground control camber plates and went to town.


started off with this...

i started off by cutting the old plates i made out and made new mounting plates for the camber/castor plates

they sit a bit lower than the old setup, but it's a bit thinner, and with the shorter shocks, i'm not worried about it

i also gained another 3/4" of rearward movement to add to my castor 8)

this makes for a total of 2.5" rearward movement of the strut tops.

it was hard taking some of the castor measurements outside with the angle of the driveway, but now i'm flat, so... static castor i'm up to 6degrees.

once everything was welded up, before i could throw paint on anything, i remembered i want a strut bar, so, welding some brackets on now is the thing to do.

after cutting it to the right length, i had to drill some holes. i was reminded yesterday that drilling a small pilot hole is an excellent way of making sure your bigger bit doesn't wander off path.

then it was time for some paint! cold galvanizing primer shot in underneath and just loaded in the area's i was worried about

i still had a couple cans of L90E alpine white factory spray paint from back in the day!!

Those look really nice Derek. That is a buttload of work. I like how you put the plates up higher, and hten put the camber plates under. I guess that is cool because then all the stress of the suspension isnt on the four bolts...

I put mine on the top, which is nice because you are four bolts away from changing springs at the track.... But I hope that the bolts dont ever fail.

Hey Derek,

Excellent work as ever, and thanks for sharing. My only comment would be that you should put some seam sealer on the underside to stop water ingress between the stock sheetmetal and the new stuff.

I suppose the underseal might do it though.

actually, Jay, the owner of ground control, told me to mount them from underneath or else they will crack. i got the most compact plate set they have (it's the 5bolt universal set on their site).


Timmy- yes, that's why i loaded the primer in there. it's a high zinc content primer, then i loaded the undercoating spray in there as well. i think it'll be ok.


Wiz- no, the heads are mine :P


Tox- i don't think Christians coupe has even as much castor as i'll be running, so i'm really interested to see how this works out.

Doug- work light was obtained at a local parts store. like $50? it's a great piece though!

The aluminum plate will crack? Hrm. Interesting. I'll have to take a look at that.

well, the ones i got will. they are just aluminum, and yours are about twice as thick because they are for probably a vw right? they design the thickness accordingly for cars where they will sit on the topside of the strut tower. the ones i happened to get are designed for mounting under the steel :)

Aw, yes, that is the deal. Yeah, mine are for the VW application. They are pretty darn thick. Anything is possible though I suppose. I wish I would have put more caster into mine. At the very most forward possition, I am at stock camber(or 0) so I think i only get about 4 degrees with the camber plates right?
