well... i am back. i received the intake manifold and the welds nubz did are beautiful.
i've been gone to germany for the last 6 weeks and so nothing has been done on the car since i left. to back up and cover some progress just before i left, you must read and observe the pics below...
i sold the 3071 turbo and AAN ecu to free up some funds to finish the project. after having to make some decisions i decided that i will be installing my IIc in this car and playing with that. i picked up a holset turbo... one i think no one here has seen much of. i stumbled across it and have done as much research on it as i could find and see what results other guys using them have had. the turbo is a VGT off an 08' Dodge. it is water cooled, varies from a .35 A/R to about 1.50A/R approximately. it's electronically controlled and i built the header with a wastegate on it as an absolute backup, but i hope to be able to eliminate the use of the WG by having full control over the turbo with feedback through the ecu to keep boost where i want it. another cool thing i would like to hook up is an rpm sensor that reads the turbo shaft. i'm gonna need a speshal tach for that one :tard:
i would have used my ebay header, except the new turbo is *cough* a little bigger than the 3071 and requires different mounting, hence the forsale thread for the header (it should be gone by friday though). i slapped the new header together over the weekend before i left for germany. super low tech. all mild steel, i want to see how this thing works before putting a ton of effort and time into the EM. if this turbo fails to impress, then i still have the GT35R sitting here on the shelf that i can put in and go, at least there are known results for that turbo. i didn't want to post the pics to this until i had the header built. i somehow feel that once i start posting pics of things, progress slows. so, since the header is now down as of tonight, i'll allow myself to post!
first up, the Turbo.

next to a stock K24

the header, mock up and positioning.

the fender required a little trim for proper positioning of the turbo and allowing it to actually be removed and worked on in the car. i started as small as i could

the flange. it's non-standard and had to be handmade. turned out really well and i am happy with it.

i ran into one problem with oversight on the bottom rear turbo stud..

no room to get a nut, or wrench on there. so out came the torch, a couple of hammers, and some carefully placed blows to create a relief notch.

i also had to make a mild steel wastegate flange... which turned out well too. i usually hate making flanges because i get one hole off and then it's ruined

i got the WG positioned kind tight between the turbo and valve cover, but, everything is properly accessible. all the WG nuts, the turbo flange nuts, the header to head flange, the valve cover can be removed without pulling the WG, and all those things are important to me. as i said earlier, i hope to be able to cap off the WG eventually and have it controlled via the computer. if not, later on i will get a nice small tial unit and tuck it underneath somewhere.

this is a tight fit, but i am going to just run the dump pipe straight down to the ground.

kinda looks like an RS2 manifold!

another problem is that big honkin' outlet with a tight 90 degree bend. it's over 2.5" in dia. and pointed the wrong way, so off it came and luckily i remembered why i keep all sorts of odd and normally useless stuff around... to pilfer and mod as needed. a spare k24 compressor housing yielded it's outlet because it's the same inside dia. as the upper portion of the holsets outlet...

after that i made the boost pipe to the IC.

pic of everything together as it sits tonight

in other news i also needed to change my water manifold slightly so that the upper radiator hose will clear the IM. my tapered design takes a bit of the clearance away from hanks original spacing with these plenums.

the neck is welded now, i just forgot to take a pic of it. i also need to weld the end shut where the neck used to come out.
i also made a new radiator support bracket.

somewhere in between i also started my oil pan baffling setup too, it needs finishing...

the last thing i did tonight is try to make a list of what all really needs to be done to get it back on the road.
here goes....
throttle cable- DONE
weld throttle cable mount- DONE
weld rings on the plenum (yes flush, don't get your panties in a wad)-DONE
make a vacuum port area on the backside of the IM-DONE
IAT mounting place
fuel lines
mount fuel pressure regulator
turbo downpipe
WG downpipe
turbo/header bracing- DONE
intake- turbo to air filter piping
turbo oil lines
turbo water lines
crankcase breather system-DONE
valve cover vents-DONE
coil mounts (i am ditching the 2.7T coils)-DONE
make new engine harness
radiator ducting
intercooler ducting
oil cooler mounting
oil cooler lines
oil cooler ducting
finish snub mount
plumb WG with electronic boost solenoid
make P/S lines
replace steering rack (it's weeping now)
finish water manifold
sand/finish intake manifold
get a 60-2 tooth wheel for the ecu
install zietronix WB getup i've had for a while
pull engine and swap guts into the new block
replace bent valves
install HD valve springs
finish oil pan bafflings system
install engine
fire up and drive home
it'll be nice to start checking things off that list..
wish me luck...

How do you plan to control the VGT portion of the turbo, I do alot with diesels and so far people are staying far away from those turbos because nobody has made a standalone controler for the VG functions hense why those turbos are a dime a dozen still. That would be sweet if you could just use the ECU to control it, and maybe you can i dont have much knowledge that portion of it but it seems like all you would need is something to base it off of like rpm and map, what are your ideas?

I am very very curious how this turbo will work out for you!
my buddy picked up 2 of them (for super super cheap on ebay, I geuess the VGT electronics fail?) and will be running one on his 5.0L mustang up to about 6-8 psi. Then when he breaks something the 347 will go in, the 5.0 is more for mock-up and tuning.

PWM controlled is right. the turbo actuator gives position feedback but because i don't know the protocol of the CANbus i won't be able to use that portion. oh well. better than i can control the turbo via computer than not at all in this case. i am excited to see how well this works on the audi, there are some guys with them on hondas and DSM's with good results, like mid 400's at the wheels.
wooooot

i made a switch in coils because i couldn't find a suitable wire end for the 2.7T coils. had to make a new bracket, but, this one turned out better, plus these coils are narrower and give me room for the crankcase breather i made earlier in the year. the breather can fits better here than over in front of the brake booster too.
