Toxcheap wrote:Well in that pic you can see how the 5k shifter would bolt right in and just need the boot and rods. The b5 S4 uses a different style shifter all together. I have a picture uploaded here some where. I'll try to find it. Generally you use the b5 s4 linkage when you get a b5 01E and the urs4 linkage when you get the urs4 01E

how mcuh different is the base of the b5 linkage? so 5k is drop in fitment, but how hard is b5 s4 linkage adaptation? i think id rather go that way and get a sweet uber tight shifter setup as theres a lot more support for b5 stuff out there

WARNING.
you will bend valves w/ an obd2 aba block and 16v head.
the pistons are different, theres just enuff room on the obd1 slugs to clear them. if i were you, i'd take a dremel and a VERY steady hand and cut some valve reliefs into the piston tops or risk bending your 8 intake valves.
the oil squirters and crank arent rreally the problem....
hope u havent found out the hard way bru.

ideally run an obd1 block,(im running a stock one and i havent had the head off yet, but ive bounced rev limit a few times and my motor seems kosher...)

but you can cut reliefs in the piston tops(plenty of meat) or get a set of 9A pistons w/ the 159mm ABA rods rebushed to fit the 9a wristpin.( lil $$)

if i were you, and def. gonna run the obd2 block, take a dremel or such w/ a cut-off wheel about the same diameter as the intake valves, and either mock up the block/head w/ ink on the valves, pistons all the way up, and then spin the cam pully so they push into the pistons and mark where they need clearance. then grind pockets at roughly the same angle. my buddy did it, rev'ed his motor to like 7500, i think.... w/ like 20psi holset hy-35.

its worth a quck mock up w/ old HG and ink or clay in the cyls to check clearance. i know ive seen the stock obd2 with 16v's & 8 bent in valves on a vortex thread. not tryin to screw up ur plans, just saving you the headache later. poke around vortex and look for the thread/s on obd2/16v's if u dont believe me for some reason.....

hmmm ok nope i havent blown anything up yet, but what i read on whoretex is that they will clear as long i dont manually change the timing

but i will def spin it by hand first no matter what

and this is still a ways off i wont be able to work on it until early early spring

I purchased this 4kq from a member here, CooterIFY, and my friend, Toph, who will be registering here soon too, bought his 200 20vt as part of a package deal. He was being deployed and would be unable to store the cars, so we will be takign over where he left off, in the preservation and modification of the cars!!!

it has about 175k miles, there is a bit of surface rust, and several small dents and plenty of minor dings. although all my windows work, the sunroof works and closes/opens swiftly, Both power windows work! te interior is UBER clean, i may end up swapping the dash to my T-red car ahaha, it also has an almost fully functional trip computer.

the car was originally zermatt, but was sprayed over with some zermattish, but much lower quaility paint.
the gas gauge doesnt work, prob jsut the level sender
a/c doesnt work but all the parts are there
also cruise control doesnt work but the parts are all there aswell

as i already have a minty clean summer only 4kq, so this ones getting comissioned to year round duty, ill remove the a/c most likely, eventually itll be converted to a 16vT, as to lighten up the front of the car a lot, and maybe even a front mount radiator!!!

this car wil be primarily for all over beater use, and major winter use!!! i need to find a large packasport roofbox, and this thing with locked diff;s will be a truly unstoppable snow/ski trip mobile!!!

WOOOOOHOOOOOOOO!

yes and the color has changed, the oversprayed Zermatt is out, and a better color for a snowbound mega ski trip car is partially on the car and only getting better looking!!

FYI my swap took 3 days, but that's only because I had to take the assembly back out, I installed the clutch fork upside down... doh!
Otherwise it went way smoother than any turbo engine. No need to remove the battery tray either.
Wiring can be a pain if you have never done it before, but if you have a complete 7A harness to get the engine going it's 5 min tops, the black plug and fused parts are all you need to hook up to get it going.
