Hanks URQ 2.6L Autopsy

I am still a recovering surgeon. It was a very clean car. Its gotta have something mechanical wrong with it, because it was very clean. I felt somewhat bad tearing into it, even though I knew it was going to a better place
Near Future is probably a stretch. I will probably stash the parts away for after graduation and a few years thereafter. Still, when the parts pop up, it is a rare find that needs attention. I thought I was going to pass out from heat exhaustion and dehydration doing it today, but I am glad I did.

Re: Hanks 81 URQ Clutch woes..
The pilot bearing ate itself. Anybody think this is related to my problems? I can not figure out the relationship?
Fingers looked great, and the surfaces were abused but not welded or deposit ridden. They looked like every other fw and pp I have ever removed.

Could it be that the input shaft was binding on the crank shaft causing difficult shifting? This is one of my theories for my car anyway because I've had similar issues ever since I put the 200 20v tranny in the car. My thoughts are that if the crank through the munched pilot bearing is trying to turn the input shaft then the syncros are having to work extra hard since the gears have a tough time lining up properly.
This is only my theory, and haven't pulled my tranny to see if my pilot bearing is toast. I'll find out when I pull the tranny for the 01E swap I guess.

I'd bet if you replaced the pilot and put it back in, it'd be fine....
I had a pilot rust the crank and input shaft together (went through some DEEP water). I remember posting on here about it, and Derek called it...

Dave I can't figure out how to post pics iwi the damn iPad. Can you post up the carnage?
As the pictures will show, the impute shaft is basically free floating now as any sign if a bearing are gone. I just assumed the 016 torsion used the same bearing as th 016 locker? Perhaps bits of bearing are jammed in the pressure plate where they are not suppose to be.

Re: Hanks 81 URQ Clutch woes..Tranny pulled
measure your input shaft OD so you get the right bearing, there are two available.

Pilot can definitely cause non-disengagement, but it still does not explain your low pedal engagement problem, does it?
Re: Hanks 81 URQ Clutch woes..Tranny pulled
when I was talking to you about the bearing and i kept asking what about the casing... i realize now that you put that throwout bearing in from a 5000, the one i ordered for you. I was picturing an incased bearing like the style my coupe and the urs cars use.
anyway, pics

love the flower look of this

Pressure plate, hard to see but that rivet has its side shaved

you can see well in this pictures those rivets

clutch, notice the one side is shaved from impacting the pressure plate

Thanks Dave.
The shaft od is 15mm. Anybody have a locker 016 laying around? I would check my last busted one but the metal recyclers around here are ruthless. They steal anything that is left out for more that five minutes.
It should be noted that the clutch mc and slave were both replaced and bled just prior to dropping the trans.
Thanks for the impute guys

Re: Hanks 81 URQ Clutch woes..Tranny pulled
I can check tonight when I get home from work, but you probably wanted it a bit sooner than that. The locker must be smaller and was put in a larger bearing. If you have cars that don't run, like the ones I own, you wouldn't be having these problems. The Spec 3+ looks as good as the day I bought it. Pilot bearing also!!!
Re: Hanks 81 URQ Clutch woes..Tranny pulled
I won't need it till Monday.... That's a different bearing and the clutch is a south bend!
Re: Hanks 81 URQ Clutch woes..Tranny pulled
Hank,
That sucks about your clutch. Let me know if there is anything I can help you with, even OEM parts. We are closed Monday, but I'll be there bright and early Tuesday 9am Cali time. Hope you enjoy the holiday.

Thanks Sam. I think it started to come unglued when we were driving actually. I put a set of plugs in and it wouldn't shift very smooth. I sort of noticed the notch feel with you in the car. We will figure it out.

So does that mean it was Sam's fault? If he has that kind of effect on audis by just being around them, I can see why 034 wanted him onboard.....drum up a bit of business.

The pilot bearing on my 4ktq took a dump like yours, shed the needle bearings between the disc and flywheel, fun times!

Was there engagement issues, or did you hear it and know it had happened?

Re: Hanks 81 URQ Clutch woes..Tranny pulled
I think what originally contributed to this happening was first me not installing all the engine/trans bolts all the way. Nathan was at my place helping install the clutch master firewall brace and noticed the engine would move when I depressed the clutch, odd. After a quick inspection it seemed that in my haste to get the car on the road I forgot to completely tighten the engine to the trans :frustrated:
I had driven the car for I dunno, a few months like this. I would get some nasty drivetrain vibration sometimes when letting off the clutch taking off. I can hypothesize the input shaft ratting around and tossing itself into the pilot bearing causing it to start to fail. But it was a good year and a half between tightening the bolts and the pilot bearing taking a crap.
I was leaving campus (last day of college) when I was at a stop light (clutch depressed, car in 1st) and I felt the car lurch forward a bit, hmmm, strange. I left, stopped to get lunch, came home, no problems. Later on I went to leave, started car, pushed in clutch, and I couldnt engage any gear! I could with the car off. After quick inspection all hydraulics were fine, so it was something mechanical and I pulled the engine. Pilot bearing needles were found between the disc and flywheel, lame.
Unsure if that is any help, it was an extremely freak thing that happened in my case. Hope you get yours figured out soon.

The bearing replaced fixed the problem though? That is good news.

Well I bought a brand new clutch kit, but I didnt really need to. When we pulled the pressure plate off some of the needles fell out, thats what kept the clutch engaged. For safetys sake I installed a brand new 5ktq clutch kit and had the flywheel resurfaced again. Problem solved.

Re: Hanks 81 URQ Clutch woes..Tranny pulled w/ dead pilot
Well, I think I found the problem. I did not double check the pilot bearing ID for hte torsen unit. The 3b has a 15mm shaft, and the lockers have 18mm shafts. I thus had 1.5mm of slop both ways in the bearing, and it was only a matter of time before it came unglued. I have not verified the locker OD on the shaft, but the bearigs I have found call for an 18mm shaft.
I am going to try and dislodge whatever debree from the Pressure plate and put the whole thing back together with the correct bearing and hope for hte best.
