Hank, let me know what you do on linkage, its going to be a little different on the type 85 chassis.

5k linkage will bolt in

EDIT from before, in my beater car thread mike was talking about using a 5k shifter inside the car and connecting it to the s4 front portion of the selector rod arm

seen here and more info about half way down

I started to dig into shafts a bit more. I thought I could just put URQ outers on the end of CQ shafts, but today I found that the CQ shafts have splines of only 24.5mm where the URQ stuff is much bigger at about 31.5 IIRC.

Anybody know what the s2 or rs2 splines are on the outer splines of the shaft?

I thought the S2s the outers as the CQ but with S4 inners.

Then why arn't we all just running magic S2inner cvs to adapt to the 01E? I thought you needed the S2 axles because the outers are the same but the inners are larger.

Javad about RS2 axles:
These are a high strength option for anyone with a 80/90/Coupe Quattro that uses 2-piece outer suspension, these do feature 108mm inner output axle flanges will need to be upgraded to 108mm

If they are the same axles, they are smaller cv splines just with 108mm flanges. I had urS shafts in front of me today thinking the same thing.

It would be cool to confirm if its the shafts or CVs....

431498103CX constant velocity joint with boot, attachment parts and grease
inner / 3B,ABY
Crosses with a bunch of US cars.

893498099PX wheel shaft, outer with joint, rotor and assembly parts
/ NM,7A,AAH, ABC,3B,ABY
Crosses as a US part in world impex :tard:

Of course the shaft itself is not listed. The axle assembly numbers do not cross with any US parts:

(1) 8A0407271AC
drive shaft with constant velocity joints
left / ABY
(1) 8A0407451GX
drive shaft with constant velocity joints
left / ABY
(1) 8A0407272AC
drive shaft with constant velocity joints
right / ABY
(1) 8A0407452GX
drive shaft with constant velocity joints
right / ABY

So the shafts are specific but the CVs are more common.

I guess only some of this applys to the urQ but it seems that some of these parts cross to the B2s.

ok, so if you want i can do some digging on the aftermarket end at napa and see if we list anything or any of these numbers cross. What specific part numbers are you looking for? and/or what platforms did they come on that i can try looking stuff up that way.

Well the problem is finding the axle shafts to connect the Coupe outers to 108mm inners. I'm pretty sure that they are fairly unique.

FWD 5 speed 80/90 axles to be exact, but but I hear they are 130mm flanges, not 108mm.

Hank, I can't be positive about this, but I think that the FWD 80 flanges are 108mm. My friend Lido has a FWD trans that was going into his Fox before he switched to the 90Q.

Only the V6 FWD (B4).
The B3 FWD cars (5-cyl) have 108mm inners. But they are hard to find FWD with 5 cyl and 5 speed to boot.

Here is what I found today

The shafts from left to right
- Coupe Quattro 7A
- Ur-q
- B4 FWD V6 5-speed
Image

And inner CV parts from left to right
- Ur-q
- B4 FWD V6 7A
Image

High res version of pics in my gallery

So... Ur-q and B4 FWD V6 5-speed are close, in fact so close that I thought it was a no brainer.
But just in case I thought I would slip it on... the Ur-q is larger by fraction, large enoguh that it spins on the spines but just.
Why they would change the splines, I don't know.
The only other option is to exchange the guts as the interior of both "looks" the same and the outer dia of the CV is the same (same boot).
But for that I need a parts cleaner and a nice bench which I don't have here at home.

Other solution might be for Ur-q guys with coil overs etc to use the newer 200 strut/bearing/hub assembly and that way the new CV fits just fine.
Or cut/paste the shaft at a competent machine shop that has BTDT on such things.
Or, just machine some spacers if the Ur-q shafts are too short (driver side).

Hope this helps.. I know it depressed the hell out of me for the day!

Cheers

Martin, I saw your post and got all excited thinking that you had solved the puzzle. It looks like you found a few pieces, but the puzzle still needs work. I'm glad I didn't see it until the end of the day, otherwise I'd be depressed and would have ruined the whole day.

Bummer indeed Martin. From what a shop in vegas told me, one of the rear shafts works up fronts from the URQ. It was one side that was an inch long. I need to just put the thing in there and get down to buisness.

Martin, thanks for hte work today on behalf of all of us. That was awesome. We will figure it out.

Are the 20v 200 FWD cars using axles that would be shorter then the URQ shafts. I am pretty sure the problem is just that the URQ shafts are just too long on the one side. If we could find a shaft that is shorter, we could make a simple spacer to make up the space. IIRC from my measurements, the assembly from the end of the shaft on the inner CV to the surface that rides on the wheel bearing needs to be 21 5/8". That is compressed.

Without taking it out of the car, it looks like both of the short shafts on both the 200 and Urq are really close to the same. How much shorter does the shaft have to be?

That much. :o I guess pulling the shaft out of the car for a proper measurement instead of eye balling in the car could could add or subtract some, but and inch!!

I swear you have the old shafts on the shelf up top... but maybe not. The hope is that the automatic transmission is wider then the manual 016. This is becuase the 01e is wider then the 016 and the majority of that is on the drivers side. So pretty much it needs to be shorter then the drivers shaft you have out on your track monster...

The boxes on the top shelf by the door are coupe gt struts. There is another set of shafts in the middle shelves, but I thought that they were 5ktq shafts. I haven't got to that side of the garage yet so who knows whats buried down deep.

I though they were 200 shafts becuase you complained about the tranny blowing and that you should take the 300 miles shafts back off the car and send them back in the boxes from the shafts you never sent in for the core...
