Nicely done Hank.

Looks like I need to get my hands on the shifter arm and shift lock out from a urs4/6.

You mentioned a shorter gear selector shaft. How much would you say you removed?

I'll take it out one more time to blue loctite everything, and I'll take some better pictures of the setup over there. It shortened it as much as physically possible. I am going to take good picttures for a sticky how to thread coming up.

Jhm sells up rated ones that help this out. By the looks of it? They have just drilled the rear out and put a stiffer sprng and cap on. I'll probably experiment with this a bit.

ironically this is what i have been looking at the past week or two. imma grab one out of the spare tub of parts tomorrow (first one i disassembled) and figure it out, as this was exactly what i thought as well. looks like they took the back of the cap off and put a brass plug in its place to hold a tougher spring inside.

Hmm... I takk a look at mine last night and same thing, doesn't want to return to centre without a bit of help.. is this a common problem with 01E?
Let me know if you come up with a homebrew solution.

Thanks

I dinked around with my linkage for hours thinking I had something screwed up. It makes me feel better knowing that yours does the same.

They came up with this detent mod because b5 guys eat that shift hub trying to grab 3rd. The detent makes it want to go back to center more easily, but also makes it a it more effort to get into the other gears as well. It ca't be hard to modify. They are using new oem pieces at 40 bucks a piece, which means they mod them for under 20 dllars if you include a double mark up to make it worth their while. That sounds like a spring and a new cap.

Ill get to the bottom of it :)

Hm, mine is very happy to go back to center, but I am solid linkage all the way back.

I feel like there is abit of a bind, might be in my shifter ball at the base, maybe a bit of lube is in order.
On the tranny end I also have a new bushing which might be a bit tight, time will tell.

Cheers

The older they are, the more lube they require

Mine is solid except for the brand new 034 bushing on the shirfer arm on the selector rod. I will lube up the stainless joint on the short shifter. I still think the detent beefed up would help tremendously.

i got to the bottom of it. sheesh guys, gimme time to come home and play :)

so i lopped the top off. and drilled it out. and threaded it for 1/2" NPT.

i am making mine tunable, by using a 1/2" x 3/8" bushing, then a 3/8" plug with two nuts for now to add resistance. sometime this week i will find a longer stronger spring.

took all of 10 minutes to figure out. there is a spring, a cap, and a needle bearing inside.

its a 27mm, BTW.

I like it Aaron. That would make it nice to have some adjustment, even if it's no more than just shims between the spring and the new plug. I know that's what the two nuts are there for now, but maybe just a longer spacer with the original spring.

i did some playing, John. and its MUCH stiffer.

i put a longer bolt in it, then threaded on 3 nuts. the head of the SHCS goes inside the plug. i will find a solid plug later, like an allen one. this one is a square head one and its hollow inside. i even have to pre-load it to get it to start the plug in.

remember i am just dinkin here with stuff layin around thats easy to play with.

and this one here, its MUCH firmer like i said.....

one last thing; remember to seal these threads, as this thing is lubed from internally within the trans. you will understand when you cut the back end piece off. its pretty neat inside, for a lil doo-dad thing-a-ma-jigger....
