Looks like the rear driveshaft is driven off of the "front" of a traditional Audi transaxle and depicted as going through the oil pan and the front seems to have a gearbox to fix the rotation.
Anyway, I posted this on S2Forum and figured I'd repost here: Something that I considered in the past for a mid-engined 4x4 was using a FWD engine and transmission turned sideways for front and rear outputs. Of course, for going slowly offroad having the additional reduction of the FWD final drive is desired but could be an issue for going fast onroad. Also, you'd have to make sure everything was spinning on the correct direction. I'd use one of the new 07k I5s from a rabbit or jetta and, maybe, DSG B) Hank, how much for an 07K with DSG?

I don't see how you would get around the gear reduction?

Well, you can set up a quickchange diff to have a <2:1 ratio. That is with 4.11s so using 2 or 3.x ring and pinions could help more. Not sure what the highest final drive you could fit into a FWD trans is.
This may seem obvious but the ATTESA E-TS in the GTR looks very similar the the mid-engined urQ above, aside from the use of a torque tube to keep it front engined.
I'd be cool to run an 01E in the rear with an 07K in front; just need to figure out the front output/vdrive!
