You saw the one of some flybys up there?
Went to the meet in Toronto last night. Oh boy, driving this in the snow with summer tires is insane. It just shimmies and drifts all over. But about an hour of the drive was snow/rain free. Andrew and I picked up a locals S2 replica and we tried a 5th gear roll at 3krpm. His is stock or chipped. Anyway... pretty hilarious "race". I also tried messing with a Porsche who flew by us (or was going to until I stepped on it) and got totally ignored. People seriously don't give a crap about this car lol.

Re: Matt's 87 4ktq -
so how much more control over boost am i going to get by tuning PID? I'm starting to do some reading on it so I can go in not completely blind. I'd also like to try the new firmware but last time I did the car doesn't see sweet FA for trigger.

Re: Matt's 87 4ktq -
You will gain a lot if you can get it tuned right. You can keep the wastegate shut much more effectively up until right before you hit your boost target so that actually helps spool. You can also keep the boost much more consistent gear to gear. I'm sure you might have noticed that you'll get higher boost in the higher gears or that the boost will taper off in the higher RPMs. PID will fix all of the above. It isn't the ultimate solution, but it's very good.

Re: Matt's 87 4ktq -
The boost seems really solid actually, I'm pretty surprised. I'll try to get/post a log before the snow takes it off the road permanently. It hits ~23.5psi, goes up to maybe 24.5, and then settles back down. There's like a +- 8kpa waver, the boost line in log view has a very smooth and minimal hump in the middle, it almost looks flat at first glance. I have it setup so it is trying to make 265kpa but the N75 DC is only at 41, so the DC is what's stopping it from going any higher. It's effectively undershooting, which to me seems like a nice safe way to setup boost using just the refdc/target tables. So what I'm thinking I should do is drop the dc a few % from 5.5k on to allow boost to drop to around 22psi. But it wouldn't need to be much, maybe 3-5% over that range. I also think I have it set to 100% under 3000rpm, or maybe it's 3500. Can't remember and don't have config to double check. But yeah I figured now that I have the most basic form of boost control setup nicely I could move on and see if I can improve spool or control a bit with PID. Thanks Chris.
So the other night at the meet, before the intake tract had warmed up fully (but the engine was fully warm) I did have a little bit of misfire for two pulls, then it stopped. So perhaps another .1ms is in order, or I could increase the multiplication factor so it's running less in general but ramping up a bit faster when it needs it. I have timing set to pretty aggressively drop with MAT. I think I could improve MAT A LOT by putting some shielding in there. The bottom of the pipe that goes over the exhaust manifold gets so damn hot. Any bolt on options or do I have to make something? Surely there was something there from the factory? I also think I should heat wrap that pipe for insulation.
Just attaching this config file for the timing map, nothing else, it's an old config that I went over. Don't hate

Re: Matt's 87 4ktq - "4 FOX SNAKES"
Nope. However egt will increase as timing retards. I'm not that concerned about it, egt can be helpful but in terms of how close to the edge this tune is... It's not at all. I had a base timing issue the last time it blew up. I understand that the egt will probably be slightly higher because of the .63 hotside but tapering off boost should alleviate any potential issue. And 24psi isn't really... extreme. But like hank said earlier, it's enough to cause problems. But everything is there - it's not going lean, I've pulled back timing, I have mat based enrichment and timing pull, the last thing I need to do is reduce boost as the rpm increases. What I'll have is a great base tune for Brady to eventually work with.

Re: Matt's 87 4ktq -
Why do you want to decrease boost with rpm? Torque peak is what will get you, not max power.

yes and no.
the A/R on the hotside can cause choke at higher exhaust flows (rpm) that will increase detonation likelyhood due to the exhaust backpressure.
Case in point, a 3071r with a .63 a/r is almost impossible to stop from detonating on 93 octane @ 26psi @ 6000+ rpm unless you pull out so much timing its not worth holding the boost at that level.

Tune PID. It will provide you consistent boost which can otherwise fluctuate greatly based on a handful of conditions.
The new boost control does this automatically, it's pretty slick.

No trigger, essentially. Switching back to 1.1.96 fixed it immediately, on the new ones the trigger logs show up completely blank. Checked all the primary settings too and everything was fine. Idfk

Re: Matt's 87 4ktq - "4 FOX SNAKES"
Took the car to work today. Just above zero degrees is so much fun. For the first time I noticed overboost in 5th. Because I kept 100 percent n75 dc until 3500rpm, but that was too high in 5th. Great in the lower gears. As a result I'm running slight lower boost now. PID time. It really makes sense how it would be advantageous for consistency through the gears. Anyone have any starting numbers?
It was also awesome to watch the mat ign retard table at work. I REALLY need a heat shield for that intake pipe. I'm going to get some shielded sleeving for it. There seems be quite a bit out there. Mat climbs very fast in 5th and pretty soon 2* is being pulled, it was very cool to watch and feel it work. Yay for safety! I'm pretty happy with how the tune is now, it's super safe and I know there's a lot left on the table. It's also slightly rich and I'm okay with that. Boost makes up for it

Re: Matt's 87 4ktq - "4 FOX SNAKES"
Well, looking at the weather forecast, I'm going to drive the car to the shop today and take the insurance off until spring. Kinda sad but that's the way it is! PID will have to wait until spring. I washed and vacuumed the car out today, she cleans up okay :-)
My plan for the winter is to really get the rest of the car together. It needs an alignment badly but before I do that I'm going to go through the suspension thoroughly. Also going to consider having andrew do the body work and paint over the winter. That's really just a matter of $$ though. And I have to find the flares as well. And I have to choose a colour. I'm thinking a dark metallic gray.
The entire car just needs a thorough going through. I need to figure out a legit mounting system for the ecu and all the wiring. The carpet may come out. I also need to clean up the window tint, it's weird and flaky inside. The actual tint isn't coming off, just a weird transparent layer. I need to hook up the reverse light switch and fix the drivers side door handles.
So who's going to come over and watch the kids while I do all this? Lol
