Darin's 80q…Alive...
Re: Darin's 80tq...484whp...
I'm running the 034 can with 1" lines going in and out, and it works fantastic. I've never overflowed it, both with the vent going to atmosphere and to the turbo inlet. Getting really big lines seemed to be the key, as well as moving it to the passenger side of the engine bay.

Did you route your lines(s) behind the engine, then? Also, what does being on the passenger side have to do with it? I think I'm just going to upsize my line and have nice, easy radius routing. Going to atmosphere, do you use the little filter and that's it? Or do you... point it somewhere? lol, TDI elephant hose style?

Hank wrote:This is why higher hp cars need lots of venting like what you see above from Alex. In the i5, the pickup off the back of the block is an awful blow hole that just pushes oil up into the catch can. The best way to vent them is by pulling off the valve cover between cam lobes with some sort of deflector, preferably in the front of the engine as to not get all the rearward slosh of oil. That 25whp worth of air has to go somewhere, so if it is being forced into the "vent" with a lot of oil, it is going to make a catch can's life a million times harder.
I guess I need to search your thread for valve cover pics.

If the can is on the pass side, the oil which pukes out of the CCV has to fight to loop around to the opposite side into the OCC.

Also:
Wow, This is my first post of the year on my poor URQ project.
Well, I finally decided enough was enough, and I needed to get it back on the road, and enjoy some spring driving before it got too hot. I took it down in November to keep me from rippngit around in the salty roads of Salt Lake City and Park City. It would be a shame to put rust on this rustess car.
So I took it down and used it as a jig to make some manifolds for some friends and customers. I have made 3 of them now for my car, and then people want them, and I end up selling them... Besides not having an IM, I was tired of my breather to relieve crank pressure as well. I did not have the can draining back to the crank, so I was consuming a ton of oil, and if it got too high, it overflowed everywhere. I was not sure I was getting a good vent either, as I was pulling off the rear of the VC, and I think that it was sloshing into my can..
So I went to the drawing boards and decided to make my own valve cover that would seperate 99 percent of the oil, and then I would just have it going into a can to get the remainder. I started with a 7a cover, built up the sides about an inch with plate 6061, lathed extenders for the spark plug holes and deleted the oil fill up location. I then noted carefully where all the oil was sloshing from(mostly the cam lobes) and drilled 1/4" holes where that was not taking place. I put about 40 of them in there. I then put stainless steel wool over the holes and put covers over them to provide yet one more baffle, and trap door the oil had to overcome to even get to the open space where i was pulling a vent off of..
I then found this sweet surplus piece of 6061 extrusion that I wanted to use, so I made the top, and welded in provisions for two 3/4" vents. I used pushlock hose to get from the cover to the can, and I am for now just putting the remainder into the air filter so I dont have to smell it inside the cabin.
Google-Fu

Re: Darin's 80tq...484whp...
Wow this is good stuff. I need better venting for sure - I have to drain my can daily and only use .75" hose from the CC to the can and vent to atmosphere.. Probably not enough for ~380-400whp huh
Thanks for the threadjack Darin! I've learned something valuable today!

Re: Darin's 80tq...484whp...
This setup has been working well for me. You need a really big catch can if you are going to use the crank vent.
http://www.motorgeek.com/v/audifreakjim ... e126a45c98
It vents just down by the subframe, I never smell crankcase fumes. The tip of the hose has a little residue on it, but to be expected after 40,000 miles.

Thanks Jim. Probably looking at replicating your setup.

Re: Darin's 80tq...484whp...
Very interesting stuff. I ran two -10 lines from the valve cover that tee into a line from the crankcase, then off to the catch can. That will then go from cc to the intake(haven't finished yet because I haven't finished the air filter setup yet). Now I'm second guessing myself and wondering if this will be enough. I would like to drain the cc back to the pan but didn't tap the pan while it was off so I'll probably get it running and drain it into a bottle and see how much oil it pulls first.

Re: Darin's 80tq...484whp...
That's nice. I need to remove and re-paint my VC anyway, perhaps I'll do something like this. But bigger... lol. Or at least one big one at the front. Did you do anthing else to the valve cover?

Re: Darin's 80tq...484whp...
No I just tapped it for the fittings and stuffed in some steel wool. The fittings are directly over the cams but between the lobes. I am hoping that the 90 degree bends and the steel wool can throw some of the oil back into the head but time will tell I guess.

It will still be far less oil coming out of the head like that vs using the oil pump hole on the side of the block.

Re: Darin's 80tq...484whp...
Oh yeah, and nice dyno numbers. I think the real fun starts above 450whp. The wavetrac also becomes really fun at this level with on throttle oversteer:)

Remember the days when the real fun started at anything above RS2?

This compressor is a 67lb/min compressor in software. Based off what I have seen with other creations, it is very accurate. I think 615-630whp on e85 is pretty obtainable.

That 30r wheel though... Would need 07k/Evo like head flow for that to be materialized, me thinks...

Not on this car.. lol... A 35r turbine on this setup would've yielded power well into the mid 500whp with ease on E85.

Re: Darin's 80tq...484whp...
The GTX76 is capable of over 600whp if the 68mm 35r turbine is present. Take it for what it is worth, but 034 made 670whp on a 3576r GTX on their TTRS.
The 30r 60mm turbine seems to limit that figure in the 540whp range. I have little doubt we will have be in the 530-540 range once Darin gets more fuel pump. e85 rocks.

Re: Darin's 80tq...484whp...
E85 does rock. You should see all the faces and perma-grins of those who have gone for a ride in the car. My daughter was working last night in Lehi, so I took the car to fill up with E85 and fill my 5 gallon jugs. 158 miles…..12 gallons….about 13mpg
Who cares though. The thing rips!
On the way home at about 11:30, a couple of guys come up next to me in a new 3 series BMW. As they pass I see the driver looking over to figure out what the car is as they pass. I downshift to second, let her rip. 70mph came in a flash and there was no attempt from the BMW to hang. He just rolled his window down as he went through the light we were turning at, giving a thumbs up and yelling woooohooooooo! I looked over at my 15 year old daughter and she simply said, "Dad, don't do that again, that scared me!"
