2014 F1 Discussion

Post by PRY4SNO »

Anyone follow Formula1?

I'm dying to know about the turbos they're using... in Indy they use the BW EFR line. Does anyone know if they're standardized across the field, or if individual teams use different turbos?

Anyone bold enough to predict the '14 champ for driver/constructor?

Asked Mike Spinelli of Jalopnik about the turbos, and this is what he had to say:

IndyCar standardizes the turbos to save cost, but in F1, Ferrari, Mercedes and Renault Sport all design their own units, within specs laid out by the FIA

I'm pretty sure they aren't a standard turbo since they tie into the hybrid generator system.

The turbos are farrrr from standard. I believe Mercedes are even rumored to be running one with the turbine at the back of the motor and the compressor at the front, with the MGU-H sitting in the valley of the motor. It is very interesting how different the compressors and turbines sound--the different engines all sound distinctly different from one another.

So if i'm reading that correctly, the mercedes engine is basically a turbo v6 with an eletric turbonator in the Turbine Housing driven by the battery/friction? Weird stuff.

The vid I posted shows a animation of the Mercedes setup. Looks like the turbo is still driven by wasted exhaust, but in the center section between the turbine and compressor is the electrical turbonator*, which ties into the generation system... and alot more haha amazing stuff going on in F1. Its funny when you hear the drivers talk about the 15,000 RPM limit being a issue for some of them haha
