Project B4 - for sale
This is a car I bought a few years back because it was already set up to do well as an HS class car in autocross. It just so happened that this car happened to win first in nationals a while back. I met the owner at a pro solo in Wendover and watched him drive the shit out of this car. A few years later, I picked it up off the guy who bought it from him, so I knew the car well and what it was capable of doing. That year I took First in HS in my region. I would like to say I have the same skills as the original guy, but Im not far off the mark. The car is a great platform, but it can only get you so far. I definitely pushed the car to its limits in its class, but it just doesnt have the power to get to the next level. plus I have been having problems with the way it has been running anyway. seems to have a management issue that has exhausted my patience without any results. The engine is still good but I have had enough with trying to find the problem. Besides, the prospect sounds way better anyway.
So here is what I have

This car was already modified by me once before because of a bad 2nd gear syncro. Pulled the trans out and backwards engineered an 016 back in. I diddnt like the gearing in the 01A and this one feels much better on the top end. I have since decided not to transplant the 40V into the car and have decided to build a supercharger to upgrade the current motor. I have picked up another VEMS and have scrapped an extra ECU to scavenge the connector in order to build an adapter to pair the stock harness to the VEMS. I will pair the engine up with the vems first to be ready for the supercharger and its differences as well as take advantage of tuning the engine to its maximum potential.

Sweet! What is your estimated timeline? I'm looking forward to a ride in this!

Re: Project Transplant B4 40V
Oh nice, I can't wait to read about the progress!
Re: Project Transplant B4 40V
I hope I can complete it by the end of summer or sooner. but we will see what obstacles pop up in front of me. Murphy and his laws always get in the way. maybe just by expecting trouble I can bob and weave through said obstacles when they materialize.
Re: Project Transplant B4 40V
Awesome project and attitude! Can't wait to follow your progress.
Car looks awesome by the way.

Re: Project Transplant B4 40V
If the frame rails are shaped the same inside as the type85/89, you will have to put big notches in them. Check 40v4kq's thread for what we did on his car.
There are a LOT of things that make the 40v engine pretty tough to install in an older chassis. Overcomeable, but very time consuming.

Re: Project Transplant B4 40V
I understand Derek. I certainly have the skills and friends with the skills to overcome any problems that pop up. I anticipated having to deal with the frame rails and possibly the subframe "IF" it was the same as the 4KQ. I invite anybody with first hand knowledge whether there is a difference between type 85/89 and a B4 frame rails please speak up, otherwise I will find out trial by error style just like others do on here. Im certainly no stranger to modification and fabrication as you know. I have read through 40v4kq's thread and there is lots of info there but not everything. there are a few questions I would like to ask you and Dan about his build, but I will wait till I get to that point.
Im glad that you are supportive and obviously positive about the project im about to undertake.

Re: Project Transplant B4 40V
I just bought a 1994... thinking about running it in HS @ a few Autocross events this year. What tires, shocks, mods were you and PO's using?
Correction... some nice lady stranger in Baltimore gave it to me with a bad clutch...

Re: Project Transplant B4 40V
sweet, thats cool. well, unless the scca rules have changed for HS you can use a K&N as long as it fits the stock airbox, you can replace the shocks with whatever, (I have Koni yellows) and you can run R-compound tires on the stock size wheels. you must run stock springs with no other suspension mods. you cannot mod the ecu or the engine, at least, it cant be obvious anyway.
The one thing I wish I could have changed was the the ecu and how it fell on its face at the top end. its good down low but it pulls timing when it approaches redline and fizzles out. other than that its a great car and gave me a first place trophy for 2008. there are some great handling cars nowadays that belong in HS but they just make it more fun and challenging to kick their buts with a 20 year old car.

Re: Project B4 - a different direction - Supercharged!
I think they will allow cat back exhaust and swapping either front or rear sway bar now...
Re: Project B4 - a different direction - Supercharged!
Yes, I forgot mine had an exhaust on it as well. I dont know about the sway bar but that sounds great. too bad once I go supercharged it will have to go into SM but I have been there many times before. it just pisses the other cars off cause now they will have to work for it. once when I was prepping for the Autox I saw a kid that was also in SM pull up in his built Evo(built with mommy and daddy's money) saw my 4KQT and mouthed the word F!!! he did not notice me see him say that but it was nice to know it pissed him off to actually work for it. Boo Hoo!
Have had some fun times and memories Autocrossing.

Re: Project B4 - got half the parts to convert to 5 lug
So I went to the junkyard today since it was half off Wednesday. picked up the rear knuckles off an A4q to get me started. I still need urs front hubs to finish off the conversion, so if anybody has some they want to part with, I may be game.
Re: Project B4 - got half the parts to convert to 5 lug
Dropped by Pull n Save for another half price Wednesday. I got a 3 spoke steering wheel and the lower shifter box. I put it on today, and I'm waiting for Chris (wheeljack) to pull and machine the front hubs for me so I can do the 5 lug swap asap.
Re: Project B4 - got half the parts to convert to 5 lug
So sunday I finally got the front machined hubs from Bryden. I spent from 2:00 till 9:30 doing the swap, and as I got home, I was thoroughly exhausted and quite dirty. Even though I dont miss fixing cars for a living, I need to find a house with a workshop that will accommodate a lift, and buy it. Im soo far out of shape to do repair its a joke. I like my current position as an electronics tester, but its killing me slowly sitting in an office chair for hours on end. Not even close to the physical demand I was used to before.
Anyway, I fought the bearings tooth and nail, and won eventually. I could never have done it without my hub tamer. What a great tool, and was worth every penny at the time. It really does pay for itself in no time. I shimmed the hubs out to take up the slack and did not have to shim the caliper. I would not have been able to bolt up my wheels otherwise and would have been rubbing on the tie rod end. The rear knuckles I got from that A4q bolted in with only the antilock brake sensors giving me trouble.
All in all, its done and I am very happy with the results. I did not get pictures yet. Soon.

Re: Project B4 - 5 lug...Done
It looks like these wheels fit better on this car then my coupe. they sit further out then on the coupe.

Re: Project B4 - 5 lug...Done
nice work!
Re: Project B4 - 5 lug...Done
may have pulled a rookie move. when I installed them, I pulled them in on the inner race with the hub tool. hammering on that with my half inch air gun may have damaged the bearings as I am hearing the fronts hum. if I gotta replace em again, I guess ill have to. spending double on bearings wasn't what I wanted in the end. it is what it is, I guess.
Re: Project B4 - 5 lug...Done
Sucks about the bearings!
Are you planning on adapting VEMS to the B4 harness or just going to run a sub harness? As I've got a VEMS sitting around in my CQ (long story), I am tempted to build an adaptor harness (in my SPARE TIME) for the 90 to bump up the redline and timing so it does not fall on it's face above 5500 (this reminds me that I should ping Mance and see if he's back in town so I can get the real story on what happened to his Haltec and and parts that did not sell from his bottom end build :-) ).
