B4 Subframe/axles/01E compatibility

Post by xpalendocious »

Short Question:
My Question: I purchased the axles from the 1997 Cabriolet because they appear to have the appropriate inner CV joints to allow the use of the 01E 108mm flanges. Will they work with an 01E in a B4?

Long Version:
New member, long time lurker first time poster. I'm on my work computer right now, so no pictures or much detail. I'll get a project thread going sooner or later.

Anyways - I have some compatibility questions that I'm hoping to clear up

My Car: MK2 Golf/GTI with 1995 B4 Audi 90 Quattro front subframe, axles, control arms, steering knuckles, steering rack, struts etc. Rear end from 1988 B3 quattro. Currently has stock 3.89 01A transmission, stock 4x108 hubs

My Goal: Install 01E, convert to 5 lug, upgrade front brakes

Parts Collection:
-There is a 1997 Cabriolet at the junkyard. I purchased the subframe, control arms, axles, steering knuckles, struts from this car as spares
-TDI 01e from Hank /IMS
-100mm B5 rear diff flanges
-034 RS2 01E replica mounts

My Questions:
-I purchased the axles from the 1997 Cabriolet because they appear to have the appropriate inner CV joints to allow the use of the 01E 108mm flanges. Will they work with an 01E in a B4?
-Which hubs for 5 lug, and a matching BBK that will fit under 16's or 17's
-Taco, or anyone, do you have subframe & control arm bushings for me?
-I plan on not using the rs2 replica mounts and instead making a cradle to mount the transmission with 1 mount from the bottom. Any recommendations on a good mount to start with for that?
-comments?

Apikol makes a nice mount for b6's, not sure it it will work with an 01e, but its a start.

Hey Kevin, welcome! Looking forward to some pics of your ride.

-- Regarding the trans swap, after much deliberation on the same point I came to a slightly different conclusion. I opted to get some 4kq diff flanges, and run OE sized axles. That way, if one happened to go on me while out and about (or away from home), replacements are as far away as any FLAPS.

At any rate, while I can't give you a definite answer as to if you can frankenstein them as you've asked, give this thread a good read. Should have answers to most of your 01E swap questions.

-- Similarly, here's the de facto thread on hub swaps:

Cliff notes:
Easiest way with the least hassle overall is to just source S2 hubs. I also did the UrS4/B5A4q hubs and was far more happy when I went the S2 route. It was a simple plug'n'play affair, and saved on bearings because the ones on the hubs I bought were still in great shape. Keep an eye on eBay or S2forum.

-- I have a full set of 034 Billet Aluminum SF bushes if you're interested. New in packaging.

-- Are you thinking the cradle trans mount due to space constraints? Seems like a lot of work, especially when they didn't come like that until the newer cars (B6+). At any rate, maybe see if you can pillage something from the wreckers off a B6.

V6 cars came with an 01E (and are also the best candidate for swaps, as the 3.slow was usually wifey driven and didn't have enough jam to overpower the trans, missed shifts aside).
