I have this idea in my head for a while now and wanted to see what you guys might think of it. Would it be a fun project to do? any thoughts comments welcome

Yep... I've been tossing around the idea of twin 7As on ITBs with bag'o'snakes and nothing else lol. Think of the glory at a sustained 6k rpm.

An all-wood, inboard speed boat with ~400bhp of glorious I5 action. Yep.

it crossed my mind of twin i5's but since i was planning running turbo on it would get very pricey.

also im debating if i should self build nice wooden two setaer boat with single propel and i5 3b turbo or
by a used small speed boat with blown motor and do the swap

Get the chassis you like and put your own power plant into it... seems cheaper overall.

I meant two 7A's that stay NA. Much more simple that way.

it would sort of cool to hear blow off go off when slowing the boat down with turbo


im looking at few bodies for the potential build i wonder the power range i the engine would have to archive to make the both move

I'd definitely go with a single turbo I5 (although the twin NA ones would be awesome too, it'd be very heavy). With turbo, you could make as much power as you want and then outfit it with the propeller of choice to get the speed you want out of it. You'd have plenty of power with a stock 3B, but I think a 5 cyl with an HX35-sized turbo is perfect for this application. It will be in boost easily by 3500 RPM and will be able to sustain good power up to 7000 RPM unlike a stock turbo. It'd be right in it's efficiency range where the boat would cruise. That's how I'd set it up.

You need a lot of torque and 'area under the curve' for a boat. A 3B might work, but you'd have to really get the trans and prop ratios spot on. Even then, I think you'd still struggle to get it out of the hole quickly with any gas turbo I4/I5. You wouldn't be able to cool the exhaust manifolds like most boats, and you'd have to do an air-to-water intercooler.

i have seen the videos Thank you for posting them i had in mind using the smallest dozni type boat for the project. either fiberglass or wooden boat. i think the fiberglass would be better on the maintenance side.

will keep you guys posted. i think before i purschase a used boat i would build the motor first.
