Audi Coupe with Porsche 944 Box Flairs

Post by Einbilden »

Ben lurking here for a while and finally pulled the trigger.Coupe is 1989 and a mess,as it has been sitting in my yard for to long.
The reason it sat so long is that i was/still gathering parts.Had to move it the other day and said screw it ,if i wait for the parts
still needed it will sit here another 6 years. So i decided to at least do what i can to move the Project ahead. Always liked
Widebody cars so after looking at tons of fiberglass flairs as well as flairs on existing cars i thought 944 flairs would look the best ,
to me anyways.Since the car had been hit , and i bought it with a Rebuild Title there was no moral dilemma when the saw hit the car
the first time.

Are you doing metal OEM 944 flares or some fiberglass replicas? Definitely interested in seeing how this turns out! I should've kept the rear 944 quarters I scrapped.

alxdr8 : Oem Metal of a donor.
loxxrider : Not experienced in bodywork , but been working with metal for a while now.
pry4sno : Thanks for the welcome.

So lining the fender up ala Urq or Sport did not lock right (again with my eyeballs ,other people may see it different). This would have been
the easy way since i would not have to section the fender. Moving the fender up locked way cool but with that came more work. The top
curve of the porsche fender has more of a curve than the audi fender so i brocke its back to make it fit. Also the audi metal needet to come
up in order to keep a good hood to fenderline. Let me state at this point that before i cut int the car i alined all the body panels and fixed
what needed fixing bodywise.

Hammerd straight and pulled up , was not playing well so i made some relieve cut and it started to be nice.

Just found the limit on attachments , Now i know for future posts but that also means you guys do not get to see the fender from the
rear view of the car till next post . The opening it created instantly grew on me I LOVE IT.

You don't have to use the attachment feature for pictures. If you use a website to host you photos (like Photobucket), you can post them here by pasting the web address of the picture between these two brackets ""

That's incredible!

You just might be able to dial out understeer from increased rubber up front alone!

Hmmmm car has 4 tires so 4 slots should be allowed , Right ? Would i have to get a different license for my slotcar ?

I know what you guys mean that would look good , and the thought has crossed my mind as well. Will see once i start the rears where
the panels lineup and look the best. If there is a slot in the rear after its hung and it looks good i will keep it. At this point i know i have to
section the rear panels to line up the Wheel Wells and possibly splice on the back half of the porsche door to the panel , to make them
reach across the audi rear quater panel because they are much longer than the porsches.

Thanks for comments and pictures , keep ideas and concerns coming also: ;)

Things i have found out:

Tire pressure needs to be equal ( 5PSI is worth about 1/8" with battery removed )
Do everything the same including the screw ups so the metal will pull the same as other side
If using used metal from other body parts install them the same way so the metal will pull the same way as other side
My right tire sits in the wheel well 1/2" further towards the front as the left ( in original audi sheetmetal ) :o

As soon as i get the other side tied in ill get you guys a Overhead shoot of the front , that thing looks Mean!!!!!

It's a common problem with 944's for people to have to roll one side of the rear fenders as there's sometimes 1/4"-1/2" difference. I believe it's generally always one side (forget which one), so it's guessed that they used one side as a reference for the transaxle mounting and it wasn't always centered exactly.

Right, 3/4ths of the subframe nuts/bolts are floating so that you can center the control arms (more commonly so the CAs can be off center ;) ). I'm not sure it could account for 1/2" at the tires but could contribute.
