lol, yeah.. this thread is a little lengthy. I was thinking about creating a separate "discussion" thread and going through and moving the chit-chat items to a separate post to clean things up.

As Haydn mentioned we both hit up the Audi Driving Experience event. I made the mistake of obeying the officials and leaving ESP on for the autocross portion of the event which really ruined my opinion of the A4.

how very un-Tiff Nedell of you 8)

I hate you all!!!!!

It starts with the audi coupe quattro V8 project of my dreams, pluss the much sought after clutch receiver and follows through to what must be the best test drive ever!

I want in!

Haydn, could you comment a bit more about that KW suspension....compare maybe to how your Miata drives? I know, 2 different beasts, but I'd like to hear...tia.

Hey Peter,

I didn't get to abuse the suspension as much as I would have liked, if I had I WOULD STILL BE GOING ;)

It is hard to compare between the 2 machines as they are so different, as you said, however I would say they both felt very similar. The Miata weighs in at about 2370lbs and has fully spec'd up JIC coilovers fitted with 12/9 springs. The car is a lot lighter than the coupe but still with stiffer springs I think (Mark what are your spring rates?)

From Goodwin Racing site "We can build these JIC's 10kg/8kg, 9kg/7kg and 12kg/9kg...and more. Email us to discuss which rates are right for you (to convert lb/in to kg/mm you multiply by 0.0179 and to convert kg/mm to lb/in you divide by 0.0179)"

Therefore my setup is approx 670lb front, 502lb rear. 15 way adjustable twin tube shocks. I was at a shock dyno tester over the winter with some friends running the same setup and the JIC's performed fairly well, but most of the adjustment was limited to the first 5 clicks. This matched up with what we found on track last year.

Outside of that the Miata has a big 1.5" hollow front ARB and stiffener plates with heim links, and the same but smaller and solid in the rear.

Anyway that was a bit of background on the Miata to add a frame of reference for the Coupe KWV3's.

As I said at the top, the ride quality felt about the same, however I had the Miata on full soft on the shocks and I think Mark had his KW's up a bit. The coupe felt a bit bouncier than the Miata but I think that is just a matter of tuning the rebound damping. (The Miata has had 3 years of track day testing to get it dialed in, plus I am running a fairly aggressive track alignment)

Both setups are definitely on the harsh side, certainly not a nice cushy ride, but very confidence inspiring in a corner. For your level of abuse Peter the V3's would be great. For a car that only sees the track once or twice a year and the rest of the time is just on the street the V2's would be a more comfortable way to go IMHO.

Having said that the level of adjustability in the V3's woudl allow you to tune the ride to your liking, plus the better damping in the V3's would allow you to run much stiffer springs without compromising ride quality much

There you go , my 2c

spring rates on my coupe are 400's all around. I need to adjust the rebound for the street as its set too high at the moment causing the bouncy ride as Haydn notes. Maybe when I can pry myself out of my office for a few moments I'll finally get around to doing some suspension tuning :bashtard:

bouncy would indicate rebound as not stiff enough... that's what i've found with stiff springs, the rebound needs to be set fairly stiff so the springs don't beat the car around.

wow, been a while since an update. 4.2 heads are done, I'll have them in my hands tomorrow. Next step is to flow bench test them and compare the numbers to the 'before' testing I did earlier.

Other updates coming soon: I picked up the JHM solid shifter assembly:

installed 1000cc injectors in anticipation of tuning on E85. I will also be modifying my fuel system to use an external pump (probably an aeromotive A1000 although I may go for dual bosch pumps, not sure yet). Will also go to -10 line from the tank forward and probably machine some custom fuel rails as well.

sigh, updates have been slow because life has been really busy lately. I was away for 3 weeks last month and now I'm paying for it big time. It isn't all bad, some of my work backlog includes tuning fast cars. Hard to complain about that :)

WOW, impressive build Marc. Hopefully next year at Carlisle myself and Dan meet up with you under more favorable conditions. Turned out to be a sheered key way on the crank pulley making the timing completly off, oh well :bashtard:

Yeah, it was odd. He kept digging, pulled the head, no signs of piston to valve contact, the belt was fine so it didn't jump(which I knoew it didn't), for some reason he was working on the lower pulley, Oh, he was re-aligning something with the 034 CPS and noticed the keyway was messed. Stinks something so small caused such and expensive tow job :frustrated:

I remember the gear on my AAN had the key partially chipped. Seems like it is a powdered metal unit, and I hear it's not all that uncommon.
