Iroz vs efi-x vs Tim's vs ? o1e mounts..thoughts?

Post by pkw »

What are the differences and what exactly is included and what of it do I need for a swap into my 1990 cq?

I know I need a pair of mounts that will put the trans in EXACTLY the same place as my current 01a.
Stuff is a tight fit and aint nobody got time to screw around with all that.

I dont think its as specific as you might think. There is a LOT of play in the OEM mounts. Slots and such. Think about how much things move around with squishy old rubber mounts. Plus all 3 outputs from the trans have CV joints, Think about how much movement those joints go through as the suspension and steering moves. The trans location needs to be close, but not down to the .001".

If you make your own, just measure carefully where the center of your tail of the 01a is and brace the 01e to that same spot and tack in your mounts. Take them off and reinforce as required.

I have a second hand set of hanks older mounts, and they fit very well. they are slotted to allow for adjustment as well.

efi x looks like hank mounts but maybe with more mounting hardware and spacer stuff. I am not sure. So, I am wondering when doing this will I need more little parts other than the 2 mounts?
I am not sure Hank includes the little stuff or else I would have already ordered some from him.
Tim has a really bad rep for following through so he is probably out.

Location wise it actually has to be good so that it does not move my engine anywhere. I do not want to take the front end off and rework the snub mount, etc. I got that stuff perfect.

I got no hardware with my used hank mounts. I simply cut down the factory bolts for the short ones. I made the spacers for the bottom bolts on the passenger side out of old OEM inner control arm bushings (cut to fit) and had to go to the hardware store for the longer bolts for the bottom.

It really is quite simple.

My 01e swap is using the following:
-01e trans
-1st gen hank mounts with homebrew bolt stand-offs.
-4kq driveshaft and center bearing
-b4 90 fwd front axles (TDI 01e specific, tripod joints)
-early model b5 s4 shifter linkage and cross bar. I Needed to extend the selector rod by about 3". I used the factory 90 selector end with the shifter connection and about 3" of shaft and welded it to the 01e linkage. A bit of trial and error, but I got it. Beware the 01e selector rod is filled with tiny lead shot. I pulled the silicone plug out of the end and drained it before cutting and welding. Then refilled and replugged when done.
-stock b3 90 shifter base rotated 180 degrees so reverse lockout is at top left.
-Had to change the plug on the reverse light switch, its a generic 2 pin type. I used an old 7a fuel injector plug. Speed sensor plugs right in.

Done. Mine actually shifts pretty nice, and the shifter ends up with a fairly nice short throw with the stock 90 shifter. Its much more precise than the 01a stuff.

I have a 2.7tt 6spd so will I have to swap transmission side flanges to bolt to my axles?

right. From a 4kq I think. Maybe you could use 108 inner CV's on your axles as another option. Not sure, as I havent done that.

You can also get the 100mm output flanges from the B5 rear diff. There is always the option to find the RS2 shafts as well.

Order from Mark and you'll get it right away if he has them in stock (ask first). I got some from Hank but it took a few months to get...

IMS and EFI-X are the same exact mounts, include the same hardware. We have a couple sets left in stock, if you order soon.
