the radiator is a dual row unit from summit, basically the biggest thing I could fit between the headlights.
This turned out to be a good decision, because it lets me get away with relatively puny fans. The radiator has so much thermal mass that any amount of airflow across the core results in decent cooling. The picture you quoted is actually the old setup when I had two intercoolers, there is now just one, dual in single out front mount intercooler. As a result of that I had to go with a pair of smaller fans, one pusher and one puller. Cooling is adequate. They are made by derale, 8 inch diameter IIRC. I am going to add a 3rd fan of the same size after I re-route the cooling system a bit so that the pipe doesn't run right behind the rad.. I've got several updates in mind for the car over the winter.

Thanks! I've been incredibly busy so haven't had a chance to get around to some updates on the car, and also this thread.
I still need to re-torque one of the cylinder heads (fresh build with head studs you need to re-torque after the first heat cycle) and after that finally tune the 4.2 so I can get some 'after' dyno numbers.
Unfortunately before I can do that I know I am at the limits of the stock fuel rails and fuel lines, so I will be upgrading those first.

Thanks Marc. I figured as much. It does look like a bit of radiator. I have had the idea to use a simular unit and cut it at the bottom to run a small, but thick IC core under it. I will probably go your route though, and stick the biggest possible Radiator in front. I kindof want AC too, and that means a small condensor needs to go somewhere.

I would like to go front mount radiator a well.....only downside i see is moving weight further forward than stock even.
Marc, did i miss it in your thread-did you use CQ, B4, or build your own core support to go front mount?
the support for the intercooler is all custom square steel tubing. the top part of the core support is B4 90.

On the PT/ABH, no, they did not fit and were modified so that they did. Should be back around page 20 or so in this thread.

a4kquattro, I am pretty new to the forums here, but have been following your build for a few months now. I have a 94 90 quattro, and am starting to amass parts for a 4.2 swap. Any particular suggestions you make? I would eventually like to boost (further down the line when all is working- i would rather pull the engine a second time than try to get it done first). Seeing as though you have done a super job here, what suggestions can you make to me? is it best to run a factory ecu/harness and what is the advantages of each (ABZ or ABH) codes.

thanks for the kind words. To answer your questions:
if you plan to boost down the road, dont even bother with the factory engine management. Definitely go with a standalone system. Also, this will allow you to get rid of the stock distributors (if you are going to use an ABH motor - the ABZ is already coil per cylinder). The dizzies add an extra layer of complexity on the swap, since there isn't a lot of room for them in the B3 chasis engine bay.
As far as engine selection, if I were to do it all over again, I'd probably go with the ABZ instead of the earlier PT/ABH setup. The engine mounts are a little harder to work out but the ABZ is a nicer motor to start with, and these days, can be had for low money.

finally got around to dealing with the tensioner for the serpentine belt setup (again). followed the KISS principle and rigged up a simple turnbuckle to keep things tight. ding, fries are done.
