Electric Power Steering Control with VEMS

Post by Grillage »

Is it possible to have VEMS trigger an MR2 power steering pump based on wheel speed? I'm getting ready to install one on my V8 Coupe after trying many alternatives to get the V8's pump to work right (it has 50 bar too much for the coupe's rack to handle)

I currently have my intake manifold switchover triggered via MISC2 output but that's triggered at a certain RPM.

it looks like I could trigger the MISC outputs on one of the extra settings like this:

Has anyone done this before? Or is this a dumb idea?

You've got the 2nd gen MR2 pump with the VSS input? I recall seeing a thread about a guy with a function generator mapping frequency and rpm/amps. Can't remember if he specified what the signal needs to be, in terms of voltage. I'll see if I can find it again...

I've shied away from this pump because it's so expensive. Keep updating this is good stuff.

I did find the later one with the reservoir and the VSS. I thought about the Volvo one too but after a search of the nearby junkyards I found 3 or 4 cars where they were already pulled.
I ended up getting the MR2 pump from the UK for about $150 on ebay. the cheapest I found it anywhere. I eagerly await its delivery - hopefully in time to get running for the drive to Carlisle in May

Those Volvo pumps are CAN-BUS so maybe a little less compatible? I dont really know.

I'll update my build thread once I get it all working.

I think the other question would be when to have it kick off. Would I just turn it off at highway speed? so maybe 90 km/hr or so?

You don't want to have it kicking on and off, it could get you into trouble by having your steering input double or triple unexpectedly. If you can get the consistent variable speed working, that's what I would shoot for. If you were to just do an on/off, I would have it off at idle
