CAT cams in a 7A

Post by type85 »

Considering running aftermarket CAT cams in my 7A (this is in a track only car- '84 4kq): I've just rebuilt it, ARP rod bolts, head studs, coated bearings, Supertech springs, aluminum flywheel, cleaned up the ports/ported, matched the intake manifold (it's from the turbo "3B" engine) to the ports, cleaned up the intake runners, phenolic spacer, bag "O snakes exhaust with only a silencer.. I'm running an 034 1C ECU, H/O coil and E85 fuel.
Plans are to also run and adjustable cam pulley.

Spring specs: "Will not bind on lifts up to .550" or 13.9mm lift. Will fit OEM retainers or our Ti retainers, includes stiffer inner spring as well.
Seat Pressure - 92lbs@31.5mm
Opening Pressure - 220@11.5mm
Coil bind at 19mm
Rate - 11.2 lbs/mm"

I'm considering running the cams below, will I have any clearance issues? I'm using the stock tappets. The springs don't look like they will be an issue as the cam "only" has 11.5mm of lift.

Does anybody have experience running CAT cams?

Does anybody have the stock 7A cam specs?

No experience with Cat cams but I found the 7A specs here:
http://brydon-eng.com/catalog/products/ ... ine-5-20v/

These seem to be pretty close to specs I found elsewhere.
'74 100LS (barn find)
'90 Coupe Quattro (AAN swap underway)
'93 UrS4 (organ donor)
'02 A4 1.8T Quattro (bone stock daily)
'08 Q7 (lemon)
'12 S4 (Stage 1...for now)
