That's a bummer.
Hmmm.... I wonder how this fits together for a 4kq that is still 4 lug.

Sorry man, you are in the same boat, but worse, as your inner joints are 100mm vs the 01e 108. Whatever we figure out will work for you though, but your 4kq axles will most likely not be used at all. We will figure it out! I am going to look into making some nice Moly units this week.

4kq is much easier, take stock 016 flanges and shave 3mm to fit the 01E
Then take 90q or CQ shafts and just swap the outer joints to old style.
This is what the guy on UK forum did to have the 01E in his Coupe quattro (typ 85).
Hope this helps.

whoops. I forgot about that guy that did that. I guess a guy could do this to get an URQ running with an 01e as well if he was willing to do smaller shafts.. I am not, but some may.
Martin, do you think you could put the races from the v6 fwd shafts in the cages of the URQ cvs and make a hybrid?

I don't even know if they would fit, but even if they did they really should be new to new or balls back in original position, not different races matched with different balls and cage. Heck I have one of my shafts right now that I was cleaning up the other day and went to reinstall the balls, got to the second to last ball and dropped one, then two and before I knew it they were all mixed up. I now have a cv that is bound up with only 3 balls installed. That said, it would be interesting to see if they were the same size to see if could even work!!

I'll try to get to a place with parts washer and better space to work in.. Craig, you staying this Wednesday night?

I really need to clean my basement and make space for a proper workbench. :x
But yes, like you dad said it is hard to make mismatched used components to work right.
I have new balls and cage from the V6 CV, but an old surround from Ur-q.
Cheers

hmm I've repacked/rebuilt cv's with different locations, did you have excessive wear in certain chambers of the cage. Never had problems with this scenario?
Re: Hanks 81 URQ 01e prep<driveshaft puzzle>
Maybe your's were so worn in that it didn't matter which ball matched up with which sloppy race. The one in question has ~90k on it. The point I was making is that even if they phisically fit by the time they wear in to their new match, they might very well be sloppy. It's like replacing a pinion gear without replacing the ring gear at the same time. Chances are the new pinion will get worn into the old ring gear match and be right where you started in not many miles.

Re: Hanks 81 URQ 01e prep<driveshaft puzzle>
Bad news Hank,
The innards from the B4 outer CV do not fit into Ur-q CV. Or I should say, they fit too well.
It's close, B4 stuff is just fraction smaller and ends up having a lot of play even though it's all new components.
Do not understand why Audi woudl change things like that... B4 CVs are same as RS2 units, yet they are have smaller components than Ur-q.. Ur-q was way overbuilt!!
Back to the drawing board... now where did I put my crayon?

Re: Hanks 81 URQ 01e prep<driveshaft puzzle>
I am talking to a semi local shop that specializes in making 4wd jeep and rock crawler shafts. Making shafts may be the ticket, and allow for stronger shafts, with the use of the tank like build of the URQ CVs.

They had to get serious with that 165hp!!
Re: Hanks 81 URQ 01e prep<driveshaft puzzle>
Martin, can you do some measurements for what lengths we are going to need for both the drivers and passenger sides? the way to measure in my opinion is to compress the inner CV so the shaft is the beginning of hte measuring point, and then take a measurement to where the inside edge of the hub would meet the CV face. If we establish this, we can start to look at all the 108mm inner/nut outter possabilities out there, and come up with a solution, or start a drawing for a custom shaft.. Liek I have said a few times, a guy in Vegas that has done it says that the rear CV works up front for one of the sides. No sense making custom shafts for two sides if we can find an off the shelf solution for it.. Of course the rears are supposivly hard to come across these days as well..

Re: Hanks 81 URQ 01e prep<driveshaft puzzle>
I think the best way to measure the shaft length would be, measure the flange to flange on the 016, then measure flange to flange on the 01E. Given that the pass side shaft fits fine the drivers side needs to be smaller by 016 - 01E flange to flange measurement.
I have both gearboxes but won't get to it till the weekend.
Bentley for 4000/Coupe has shaft lengths (rear shafts same as Ur-q).
Personally unless we can find a stock shaft that will fit I'll be going the 5k strut (with 4k spring seat) with 200 hubs for a B4 bolt on shaft.
I can do all that myself and because I have most of the parts (other than hubs) it won't cost nearly as much as a set of custom shafts.
Cheers

Re: Hanks 81 URQ 01e prep<driveshaft puzzle>
Well, I have been driving the URQ dispite the terrible whine on decel, and an idle that sounds like a faint pebble bouncing around in the transmission. With plans of doing hte 01e in the next 10 days, I could not pass up the last day at Millers before they swap over to wintercross.
The car ran really well, the first 4 runs were sensational! I pretty much beat that poo out of it, and had a ton of fun. The second gear really started to complain after a couple of runs, and then on the 5th lap, it started to sound like a chainsaw was under my legs... The 6th lap was the end of the season, so I decided to run the track, but not use 2nd at all.. It almost worked... With a 60 mile trip back home, it was less then perfect, but I did limp the poor car home.
01e is really a priority now as Vegas is one month away.. I got some leads on the one shaft that has been giving us fits.
This it the second to last run with a grinding 2nd and bad sounds..

And then the last lap..

Re: Hanks 81 URQ the death of a 016, and a nail in the coffi
So should we make a little layout of what we know does work and what doesnt..whether it be B2, B3, B4 body. IE what parts work with which. I mean whether parts sourcing is realistic, I just mean a definitive list. Because your just look for a cheaper/easier solution correct? Or is it just for a five lug solution?
Re: Hanks 81 URQ the death of a 016, and a nail in the coffi
I gotta agree with Ben, the car sounds way good.....well until the clunk clunk clunk clunk.........One thing about it Hank, is it looks like you get the most out of your trannys. It's kind of like licking the bowl after the ice cream is eaten. That's a bummer, but you better not whimp out on the Oct. Vegas GTG.
By the way when did you get a GoProHD? The video is pretty good footage, so I'm guessing here.
