It's kind of like licking the bowl after the ice cream is eaten. That's a bummer, but you better not whimp out on the Oct. Vegas GTG.
By the way when did you get a GoProHD? The video is pretty good footage, so I'm guessing here.
Na, just my new point and shoot Nikon. It records in HD though. I Iroz'ed it with some double sided tape I found in the tape cubby and pasted it to the dash, pinned between it and the windscreen. It worked fairly well. The audio pickup is awesome, and the real vid is a lot better before putting it on YouTube. I really want the GoProHD, but Katie is still coming aroudn to celebrating 1/2 birthdays. It is Sunday in case you were planning on getting me something
I wont wimp out on Vegas. I have everything besides the shaft to get the 01e in there. It is high on the to do list.

oh, I'd also like to have a comprehensive list of parts required for swaps like this.
I'm thinking I need to buck up and buy an 01E soon for the 200 and swap my 016 in the 90.

Be careful of what you wish for!! It sounds like to me, coming from 30+ years of marriage, that the 1/2 birthday thing could be a double edged sword that you may not want to wield. Her side will most likely end up being sharper so unless there is enough room and you can work on the Urq in the doghouse I'd be careful with that direction.

Okay, a bit more information pulled from manuals for information.. Here is the data from the 4000/coupegt/quattro manual indexing the different shaft lengths..
Here is the data from the 5000 manual. The 5000 never came in an AWD automatic configuration, so I assume that the two options are for 016 trannies and then auto FWD. The 016 lengths between the FWD and AWD must be the same.
I did stop by the junk yard, and the inners on the 5000 FWD Auto's are indeed 108mm inners, and the outers apear to be the same splines as the URQ/4kq hubs..
Unfortunatly, it looks like the track of hte 5kq was wider, and so this info in only useful for the type 44 guys wanting to do 01e swaps.

If the pass side shaft is the one that fits it means it's the short one. You can then use another pass side one (short) on the driver side with flange extension?!? Or do I need another coffee this morning?

IT would appear that the solution lies here.. I'll call the shop in Vegas today and get the skinny on my memory.
Even if it was the case, are the fronts available anywhere besides secret Martin chambers?

Yes, they are called the early 1984 4kq rear shafts.. They are identical to front Ur-q except swapped right to left.

So... who wants a shocker?
Not trusting rumours I went out and decided to measure the flange to flange dims on both 016 and 01E. Drum roll......
The 016 is wider!
According to my Mastercraft handy dandy measuring tape here are the figures.
From center line of the trnamission (input shaft)
016 Pass side flange is 135mm Driver side flange is 150mm for total of 285mm flange to flange
01E Pass side flange is 115mm Drivers side flange is 155mm For total of 270mm flange to flange
That is 15mm difference. Both were measured with 108mm output flanes installed (I had 130mm flanges on my 01E originally).
Looks to me like the Driver side shaft is the one that should fit without much of an issue and pass one requires a spacer, or a longer shaft (by 20mm) if you can find it.
Hope to have Craig here tomorrow to help me throw the 01E in and I'll see if the prediction pans out.
Will update tomorrow. Hope this helps

:woowoo: Now wouldn't that be cool!! Where did we come up with the O1e being wider? Is the case wider but the flanges sit farther inboard? At any rate that sounds like great news. Good job Martin.

That is good news Martin. I set out to do the same today, but my ADHD got the best of me.
Scott just said in another thread that the 01e is wider, and that it is offset to the DRIVERS side. I Like scott well enought, but I hope he is wrong!

He's right about the Drivers side being 5mm out more, but the pass side is well in. I'll report more tomorrow after the tranny is in and I get to try couple of shafts..

Great videos Hank! (your 016 probably won't agree) Good luck with the halfshafts.

So... with help of Craig Cook (Highlander) got the 01E in the car and were able to verify few things.
You need to use both short shafts. The long shaft will not fit either side. The pass side short shaft fits, but could use a 5mm spacer. It doesn't make much sence since my original measurement of flange location suggested we would have 20mm to play with. But I'll take it. Here it is all bolted up.. Excuse the dirty CV but this is just a preliminary fitting.
The drivers side which originally had a long shaft will not work anymore. On this side a short shaft needs to be used with what I measure to be a 25mm spacer. Here is the gap to be filled. Again excuse the filthy CV.
The good part is that spacer is much easier to make than shortening a shaft.
Next came the shifter. I used the entire Ur-q shifter rod with selector and tie rod. Here is the extension piece (1/4" thich bar) to allow tie rod to work properly.
And the money shot in neutral.
There is an issue getting the 6th gear engaged as the shaft hits the floor, but that can be fixed using the proper 01E selector which I wll modify to allow use of Ur-q rod. Here is a pic of the stock 01E selector and Ur-q on the right, the Ur-q ball needs to be transfered to the 01E part.
So, Hank, can you machine some 108mm CV spacers? Another quesiton is, does the space for the shaft increase or decrease as the suspension is loaded (from car in the ir to car on the ground)? I think it increases, but would like to confirm with someone who knows 100%.
Cheers

I'd think it would increase since when you jack a car up, the tires usually slide inwards.

Nice Martin. It appears that two Passenger fronts, or two fronts and one rear drivers shaft will fit the bill. Where those measurements with the wheel off the ground, or on the ground? The shortest the shaft will be is at the ground with the wheels straight. The longest with the suspension extended, and turned to full lock(like around a corner with the inside wheel lifting). If you can compress the suspension to ride height and not have the shaft bind and then have it released and get full lock without bind, you are golden.
