Well I finally got around to pulling Hank's Ur apart. I had resisted some, not wanting to see the hole in the piston, but finally decided it was time. We diagnosed the problem pretty accurately, just forgot how fast a piston gets up and down in a cylinder. Anyone need a 9v big valve NG? :( I guess redline with 25lbs of boost on 200k sodium exhausts was a bit much!! It sure ran good while the party lasted though. :o The good news is the less than 500 miles 3071 garrett looks like it survived. Suggestions on what direction to go next are welcome.

Damn! Glad to see the turbo looks OK. I'd pull that housing off and make sure there's no notches in the wheel.

I'm preaching up the 20v tonight so, well, ya know

You know what's funny, I was just getting sick of my pics being on the home page, so I was going to request that someone else go out and destroy something. :woowoo:

That's the way it seems to be heading. I just picked up a 80k MC1 that would sure make it easy and not waste that pretty header. I gotta say though the 87 4kq in the side yard looks like its just begging for that header and motor.

That's why I tore it apart. To help you, :slap:

Thanks! It's all about your comfort level. Those 20v heads scare me, and without some new inconel valves, I'd be scared to run one the way we want to all the time. Then it's the never ending battle of do I dump money into this, or will I want even more later. You already know the deal, I could go on forever. I guess in the end it all comes down to $$$$.

The big grins ARE worth quite a bit of money, how do they say it "PRICELESS", but the time spent and the snide remarks from the other side of the bed does get old.

The V8 is waiting and I need to borrow the hoist.

It should make for a good motor. I really have a lot to do before head time though. I just thought it looked good in the car. It covers up the hole in the piston.

Does that mean the 20v manifold that was pictured is now up for grabs?

NO, like I said, I have a 4Kq that needs a motor and I still haven't totally decided 20v for the Ur. A 20v would sure make things easier and faster.

Ok, well I will start on progress yesterday.. I got the shortblock out of the UR, which has the hole in the 3rd hole.

It is a pretty much a ground up rebuild, which I dont mind too much, for this time around it is going to be a beast even more than before. I havent decided what turbo I am goign to use, but I have the whole garret line to choose from.. I think Iwill start off with the GT30r that I picked up recently with the .82 hotside, and then maybe when I get it all sorted out, I will throw in the gt35r to see if the 016 can hack it.
It didnt take too long, I got the cranks out of the 7a shortblock that I picked up from Darin, and then got my MC block all prepped up...

I am going to take everything out to the machine shop on Monday, and then I am just waiting for it to get back, while in the meantime, i will do all the fab work.. It is going to be a busy 3 weeks.. That is my goal to have the car running..

Anywho, here are a few parts that I have amassed over the last 2 years..

JE pistons, 8.4:1 81.5 bore
Scat rods provided by 034 motorsports
All ARP studs provided by 034 Motorsports
Spec, Stage 3+
Cool 20v flange that is going to be a rad IM here shortly..
Tube header, but I am itching to roll my own
New bearings and what nots...

Other cool parts on the shelf..

Anywho, that is the update for now!!! She is going to be a beast again!!!

Now how does one accumulate parts over 2 years when you aren't in the country??

ok, so you got me Darin!!! LOL I guess my Dad was amassing parts under my direction!!!! All except for the pistons.. which I scored from the UK for a good price.....
The rest my Father has done a pretty good job of amassing... There is pretty much everything here to make a screaming car. I have to figure out fuel at this point, and everything else is there... I need to find a 044 pump, some -8 lines and make a fuel rail.. or buy one from 034. But it is goign to be getting done this week for sure.

Gotta get this thing running so I can dip on some s2s at Millers!!!! LOL

Okay, I have been taking pretty good pictures lately, but my memory card has been misplaced, and so I am still looking for those pictures....

I everything out of the engine bay from the doors up, and it is getting ready to get painted this week, but it needs to be the eventual color of the car...........The problem is that I dont know what color I want to paint the thing. I am leaning towards a grey or silver, but I am not sure... The car originally was that Rose color that is pretty rare, especially on this side of the pond.

Anybody got any opinions???? The machine shop should have the shortblock done this Friday, so I am stoked about that, just need to get fabin in the meantime. I drove the 89 volvo 740 today, and it just aint cuttin it. LOL..

Anywho somebody give me some direction on PAINT!!!

Hank :thanks:

I really like Zermatt, but I like that Rose red color as well. A respray would be a little less expensive.

I vote for Rose. It's rare, and it's the original color.

anybody have a good picture of a few Rose URQs??? I am actually considering it....

Darin, that is kindof what I am thinking as well.... I really like the stone grey that runs around on a few older audis.. but it seems kindof dull for such a classic and sweet sportscar

Ok, now I am a little stumped. OK, this is the VIN off the car... WAUZZZ85ZBA901633

The title says that it is a 81. The problem is that I dont have the paint code sticker. And this is the color that I see as being the original.. but a site that I used that shows colors that dosnt seem to be this one...

What color do you guys think it is???

Here are some progress photos as well..

I got the subframe and transmission out for paint, and clean up... I think I am going to put the 016 out of the 5ktq though just to get the taller 5th gear. AudiWorld lists the URQ tranny as having a .78 5th and the 5ktq has a .73. Can anybody confirm this??

Image
ANd then finally, the new turbo that I am going to use..

HELP ME WITH THE PAINT!!! LOL
