Alright guys I need some advice. So the shop that I took the AAN to back in April hasen't even started on it. He told me when I brought it up he would be tore down within the week and be ready within a week after that. SO here I am almost two months later and nothing has been done to it. It is sitting in the same spot that it was when I dropped it off. SOO I have gone up and nagged him a bit, and during one of those times found out that none of his books or suppliers even list parts for my engine. So he tried to convince me to do a "stock" rebuild and everyone here knows that isn't going to fly.

SO should I go get back the engine and just do it here. Pull the head and ship it to 034 or somthing to get rebuilt and and get the bottom end done up here? It's the only shop in the area that does this kind of work. The only draw back to doing all the assembly at my house is that I run the risk of getting dirt into the engine becuase all I have is a car port and live on a dirt road. Inless I pull all the crap out of my storage shed and just do it in there. :bashtard:

wow, why the hell does this always happen with engine machine shops? Its so sad.

There has to be a better place within an hour or so from you. Thats gotta be cheaper than shipping it to 034.

The other shop in town folded up and went away. Their 75 dollar head rebuild wasen't doing the trick  Well... I guess I better start doing some hunting to find a different shop.

I had similar trouble with the shop i took my block to. They had it for more than 3 weeks. And that was to just check the block and crank (which I'm not sure they actually did), hot tank, polish the crank, and hone. I built the engine myself. It's really not too hard. All you really need is a good torque wrench, a ring compressor, and plastigauge. Though a mic is better... Once everything is clean bringing it inside isn't really a problem if you have a engine stand. Shit, if you lived closer I'd say just haul it up here and I'd give up a hand with it.

 I wish!!! HAHA I Already am pushing the limits with having so many parts inside the house! HAHAHA!

Shit, if you lived closer I'd say just haul it up here and I'd give up a hand with it.

That would be freakin awesome if it wasen't 5 hours away :bashtard: Maybe if I can't get anything worked out in the next couple months I may just bring it up to my dads and build it in his shop over a weekend. I honestly have NEVER put together an engine, I know why I would need a tq wrench, but what would I be using the mic for? When assembling the head? I am a total noob when it comes to this part of the build. :bashtard:

Thanks :-)

A couple days ago I cleaned up and painted the engine bay and brake booster. It's not perfect by any stretch but I think for living on a dirt road and doing it in a car port it turned out a-ok. :P

Oh ya on a side note, I found a 5ktq tranny for 250 bucks. Would it be a worth while upgrade while I fiddling around with all this stuff? I don't know how much stronger the 016 Torsen out of a 5kq is over the 016 out of the 4kq and while I have the tranny out I could get the center diff taken care of so I have 40/60 instead of 60/40.... :D

Wow, the bay looks great!

You definitely need a tq wrench for the engine build. Its the only thing I'd use one for typically aside from any kind of stretch bolts. There is good reasoning behind that. You can get the "bendy bar" kind for like $30. They are supposedly the most accurate anyhow. Just don't get a HF one lol.

Thanks Chris!

Anyone have thoughts on the tranny?

the 5kq torsen tranny is 3.89:1 I believe. So it would require finding an URQ rear diff to make work since 4ks are 4.11:1. The swap to URQ rear diff is fairly straight forward (Derek has a good write up in one of his threads I believe his Alpine one.)

I think the transmission you want is a 91 200 20vt torsen. 4.11:1 gears and has a longer first gear than the locker. I'd ask my2000apb, He is the first person who comes to mind about having one in a 4k with a 20vt. And see what he thinks about it.

I had one in my 4k but it locked up in 4th a week after I swapped it is so I went back to a locker. I didn't get a good feel for the torsen, since the tranny was FUBR from the day I installed it. (wish I would've know tranny history)

The swap to 91 200 20vt torsen is real straight forward from the locker as far as linkages, axle cups, speed sensor, and mounts they all bolt up. only have to change pilot bearing to the 3b style and slap in new axle seals.

Would if I swapped in the rear diff out of the 5kqt???

I don't believe you could get that to happen with out making custom mounts and getting a custom drive shaft because the 5kq is a long snout rear diff. I asked about swapping 5k internals into my 4k housing to use with my URQ tranny and was told that it would not work with out the use of a URQ diff. So I would guess the same would apply for 5kq Torsen tranny.

Dang... that blows :( . SO I guess I will keep my eyes open for the 200 one.

That tranny or URQ parts...... slim pickings since both of them aren't very abundant

I may try to find an 01E with 4.11 instead. If I get super lucky maybe with a 6spd. :-D

ok so there are really two decent options money and wrenching wise
4.11 torsen 200 20v trans

from what ive gathered driving it around, its the same 1/2 that is in the 4k 016, but with larger 3/4/5 its awesome, such an improvement, an on par upgrade with the 3b swap its that good

for installing that, you jsut swap in the speedo mech gear and pickup gear, the trans cup comes out and the parts swap straight over, the 4kq mount arms work

check my project thread, its all in there

other feasible option is a non wide 5 speed o1e, as the 6speeds are lke 1200, the five speed is fine, i got mine for 200 bucks, use a 5ktq linkage and it should bolt right in, though the 01e is 14mm shorter than an 016 so either make a 14mm spacer for the trans output to driveshaft or scoot the motor back a bit

lmk if you have more questions

also note that the halfshafts will be completely different lengths as well with the 01e applications. What he just outlined gets the transmission in the car with linkage, not complete

yeah 200 20v is the way to go for sure, prety much drops right in with a few small supporting parts swaps

Ok sounds like the 200 20v is the way to go! :woowoo:
