Martin,

Looks awesome! Excuse my ignorance, but what turbo are you installing?

Wow,

Looking really good Martin.

I can't wait to hear it running.

Did you mount the coils yet?

What's next on the agenda?

Cheers,

Craig,

I finally feel well enough to start doing some work.
I have not installed the coils, however I did manage to get the heater core and hoses in Sat night.
Next are the coils, coolant pipe and radiator.
Then finish interior/wiring and door trim (that should take couple of evenings at 1-2 hours each).
After that the alternator, power steering pump/hoses/reservoir and after all of that is mounted the IC to see how I need to run the pipes etc. Leaving the hardest for the last.
Before the IC goes in I'll need to swap the cams to 7A.
Last will be headlights, valance and bumper.
So close I can smell it.

Any chance we can have that P/S bracket copied? And when you are available would love some help with the downpipe.

Next weekend I am planning on dropping by JDM for 3"SS and IC pieces.

Cheers

Hey Martin,

The ps bracket we'll have to make from scratch.

I won't be able to get mine off until spring, then I'll draw the brackets up
and get some water jet cut.

It's no big deal to make a bracket for now.

As for the downpipe, we'll get that done also.

Keep up the good work.

Craig Cook.

Major progress this weekend... family is away to Ottawa for few days (thank you Kerry), so I have plenty of time to push on with this one.

Image

Few milestones, Craig Cook, I mean Tartan Motorsport representative came by this morning with his mobile downpipe kit and look what we have after few hours of tinkering.. ;)

Image

it still needs to be fully welded, O2 and EGT bungs put in and the wastegate connected, but those are minor issues, I was worried about the proximity of the turbo to the rear strut tower, but it all worked out excellent.. nothing like nice 3" downpipe.. thanks Craig!!

Image

Image

Image

Next was the intercooler... yes, I had to do it.. this is before:

Image

And after: :o

Image

I tried to do this project without cutting anything on the car, however to get this intercooler in, I woudl have to remove the alternator, and the crank pulley!!
Makes installing this, much much easier.

Image

And with the cut out piece back in place..

Image

Image

Image

I also got the coil bracket in, decided to keep it in the engine copartment.

Image

Did some more interior and wiring... ahem.. dog's breakfast. Doing the digi, Motronic and Euro front/rear harnesses at the same time is a bit tricky.. my Euro '85 was much much easier... I'll be glad once this part is over.

Image

More work on the intercooler and downpipe tomorrow.

I can't belive that you cut your core support!!!! Looks great Martin. I was going to PM you this, but your thread documents the 01e pretty well. I removed my small 8mm spacer on the passenger side cv to space out the half shaft. I have been running like that for a couple thousand miles now with no issue. The Drivers still requires the 33ish mm spacer, and that will make it out to you really soon.

Martin it was a good day.

80's music,beer and wrenching............what could be better.

Your making great progress Martin.........keep it up over the next few days.
Sorry about the core support.......not.

You've got to do what you've got to do. It's like fitting a 5lb bag in 1lb space!!!!!!!!

I like the way it's turning out.

After I left you, I took out the quattro and gave it a good beating...............these cars rock!!

You need a better welder also.......I'm embarressed with those tack welds I did.
Oh well.........."you can only piss with the cock you've got"

Good day.

Cheers,

Craig Cook.

Craig,
What did you have to do to convince Martin to cut the core support? Wonders never cease!

More stuff done today....
ISV, Intake temp sensor and TPS sensor harnesses done. To keep the S2 harness original I make up three seperate plug in harnesses to extent them to the front.
The engine is now fully wired up, hope to start it for few seconds tomorrow (no coolant yet).

While I was there I also hooked up the ISV, I was able to use all of the stock ABY hosing and it worked.. ;)

Image

Also figured out intercooler outlet orientation, wish ducktape held 30psi.. ;)

Image

Drivers side will be tricky, might have to keep the outlet as short as possible.

Image

Pass side, no issues there.

Image

And finally finished up downpipe connection to (for now) stock exhaust. Just need to do the wastegate portion and off to tig welder she goes.
Craig, thanks again for doing the hard part... and these are my tack welds.. :D

Image

More updates tomorrow, hopefully with a vid of this thing starting up.. :o

Great progress Martin!!!

Hopefully she'll come to life tomorrow.....

Just for the record for all the urq pursuists, I did feel bad about cutting the core support for about
5 seconds..............It's a easy thing to repair if need be. I went through many hours of frustration
trying to package everything neatly on my urq, and I knew what had to be done..........let get this thing
running.

Again great progress Martin.

Cheers,

Craig .

well you are both pardoned for your urQ support cutting as you have more than done your part to keep the SQ cars alive and buildable

any man who builds a sq over many years to such an exacting degree, deserves a little slack, for his DD urq

As prommised here is a vid.

Link to video

Had a bit of a fuel leak to deal with, of course by the pump... primed oil, fuel and off she went.
Few things to sort out still, half of the dash not working (idiot lights, who needs them.. ).
Other than that looking forward to some more progress.... so, 2 hours to spare, the family arriving at 3:00pm so my fun in the garage is over.. :frustrated:

Maybe let other urq folks know about those drive adventures too? :D

(Or can you only join in if you have a red urq?)
