Awesome. So how much do you want to make on stock pistons and comp dropping hg?

I'm still slightly up in the air about whether I want to go all out and get pistons or not. Probably yes, but we will see.

Do you have a tranny solution sorted out? From what I've gathered ours are a little shaky at 500+whp (which is what that turbo is all about).

yea, im not shooting for that power....yet. I'm looking for 400whp. After that, I'm not entirely sure what those stock pistons will put up with.. Do you have any idea? Tranny, I'm going to look into 01E me thinks when the time comes

I think the rods are the only thing that could give you any problems. I wish I had stuck with the stock compression ratio. I've put a ton of timing in my engine with an A/F ratio of 12.5:1. It's been very happy with that. 22ish psi on a 35R should get you to 400whp, and an 016 should be relatively happy unless you start shifting it really hard. I've beat on mine for 10k miles with no hiccups.

I'm not exactly sure on the pistons, but I know they're very strong. Check justin(90tq)'s thread as he was running that exact setup I believe

hmm, so if you were to do it again, you'd skip the compression dropping gasket huh.... why's that? what do you think you're missing?

Gotcha.

I am pretty sure they are safe to 500+awhp and beyond. There was a guy that made like 630awhp on stock pistons (though he is opting to change them out for peace of mind), and someone made over 600whp on the stock mahle pistons in a 1.8t too (basically the same thing).

I'd also skip the comp dropping. I discussed it with my tuner friend and he said there is no need with a good tune.

01E is the conclusion I have come to too. Sucks. I would rather just build mine, but it seems like noone does it.

yea....think I'm going to just go with the CD head gasket since I picked it up 2nd hand (unused) super cheap. Guess I'll just have to boost it more....

I didn't. I had custom 8.5:1 pistons made. Looking at how much timing I can put in my engine I see no need for them. So, I'm just giving up a little torque on/off boost with the lower compression ratio. With a solid ignition and good A/F control, I don't think lower compression is necessary.

Hey Casey, I have an extra 01E 5-speed from an urS4 you can have for cheap if you're interested. Now might be the time.

yikes, that would be nice, but I don't have enough cash kickin around to get this project done that quickly

Thanks for the offer Lew, but I'm going to stick with this tranny for now to keep the money flowing to engine components

More progress today! The engine is held in by the bell housing and motor mounts only now. Have to wait till after the weekend to pull it out at which point I'll have a hoist and engine stand here.

SO PUMPED about getting this thing out of the car and cleaning the hell out of the bay :D

With the exception of the flywheel reference sensor not wanting to unbolt, nope!

Just so you know, I've spent the last 8-9 years being jealous of cars like Derek's 20vt 4000 back in the day and Marc's 20vt 4000. It's been a long time coming, but I'm finally getting to play :D WELL worth the wait!

I like the wheels, but not the chrome - Probably going to machine the lips, and paint the centers pearl. Currently looking into different lips for the rear so that I can get them to line up with the fender like the front wheels do now

Ahh my first 4k i looked online to see what i could do to it and Dereks white 4k 20vt showed up and it was game over for me haha.
Colormatched centers would look outrageous, and by that i mean VERY nice.

very nice casey! I know exactly what you mean about watching others play not having the super awesome car of your own. Its great to actually be living out one of your car dreams! We should probably go out and terrorize the town when you get yours done. :-D
