starting to assemble this thing. some balancing evidence on the crankshaft..... you know they did something LOL.

some other new parts, the Calico coated main and rod bearings.

set up to start.

and the typical assembly shots. squirters, mains, etc.

Plasti-gage the stuff, checking all the clearances and tolerances, etc.

Mini-Dave is learning as well as i am.

welded the crank trigger wheel bolts to the wheel, they will not go anywhere until i want them to. same with the oil pump gear bolt. the last one i killed, this bolt was loose. it had some good help, but better safe.

Looking good Aaron. You really know how to get after it don't you? Do you even have your name on you work shirt? I'm just trying to figure out where you get all your go from and thought maybe I ought to wear shirts with my name also. :D

and the latest round of shims arrived this morning, i had two more valves cut down .002 and .004, and this nice piece came in.

the IE manual timing belt tensioner kit, located here; http://www.intengineering.com/Integrate ... 78957.html

nicely machined parts, making it so you use the lower roller to gain more belt wrap on the crank gear as the factory intended, while getting rid of the failure-prone hydraulic tensioner.

After all of that precision balancing, you threw it out the window by adding those weld beads, even if they are very small.

I thought that, too but I wonder how big of a difference it makes? After all of the stuff you bolt on anyways, the the crank pulley, flywheel, clutch (who ever balances a clutch?). I think it is going as negligible as bits of oil, etc getting stuck to the crank (especially if no filler was used).

I balanced my complete rotating assembly, including the clutch.

i think it will be alright. they are after all very small.

yes mine was balanced WITH the FW, PP, and the plates that go between the clutch discs.

i rationalize that it will be alright as i use the Fluidamper balancer, which works on a much higher level than stock.

i have had very lengthy discussions with a few local engine builders about balancing my motor when it was getting setup. now im not sure if its right, but i just know how to put motors together, not much about why things work and how they do. with that being said i take what these guys who build (insert wild amount of money) grand pro stock alcohol drag motors say > wtf i know and am told by other friends my age (23)

with the 20v 4 cyl, or any other 4 cylinder that is a two up two down configuration. aka, two apposing cylinders are up, and two are down. the only thing that THEY would balance is the crankshaft itself. have it zero balanced and thats that. then one would make sure that the pistons all weight the same, the rods weigh the same....little side, big side, and overall weight. wrist pins, etc. anything that goes up and down that ISNT the crankshaft. now, in my non professional opinion, i dont think those welds are going to throw off the motor balance.

god damn IE makes really nice schit.

sooooo. I/we have been busy.

i gapped the rings, and multitudes of other stuff. i can now build a motor solo, except for the many tools i do not have yet to do such a task. there is a lot of specialized stuff to do this.

rings on, bores wiped, pistons installed, nice assembly lube goo. and with these ARP's, there is specific tightening instructions. the ARP mains, had to get torqued to 60 ft/lb and broken free, 5 times total. the 625 rod bolts were 55 ft/lb 3 times.

next the oil pump and front/rear main seals.

Image

now we come to another custom setup. the crank gear. IE makes a crank gear dowel pinning kit, but i asked Pete to make me a setup (that is replicable if i wanted to change the gear) with dual dowels. i know he made extra, so you have to ask but i am sure he will sell this in a kit as well. but it is to help prevent shearing the keyway on our crank gear. fit gear. measure gear and drill. install dowels. install gear. install ARP bolt. VIOLA!!!

and that pretty tensioner setup.

Image

and thats the bottom end. we put the pan on it, and tucked in to bed for the remainder of the time. it sits here in Hot Rod Row, with another 20/20 setup that is going into a MK4 GTI and converting it to R32 running gear, transverse AWD. BIG TURBO 600+ whp street car. and the motor on the right is an ABF for a 2.0L 16V with low compression setup for high boost, another street car.

oh yeah....

i also went to the head shop, and they popped out the two valves and ground them down. talking .002" on one and .004" on another..... seriously....

so i re-assembled the head, and it should be ready to go. we are going to quadruple check the cam timing before we mate it to the head, and it goes back in this weekend.

WOOHOO!!!!! watch for another FIRST STARTUP video. how many of those i got? this will be four for this car LOL.

surely not the disc though? It moves relative to the crankshaft whenever you push the clutch in....

You are correct marc no disk
Aaron you do not need to worry about those spot welds at all

yup. no discs.... only what is static to the rotating assembly.

and NOT the Fluidamper balancer..... it is not meant to be balanced on the crank.

$69.99 on clearance. SNELL 2005 good thru 1-1-2017.

and i got the blue mirrored lens.... it was almost half the cost of the freakin helmet LOL. but i gotta LOOK GOOD whilst i do this thing.... and it fits well.

i like gadgets, and lil shiny things. and i got this pair of sunglasses that also are a 720x480 digital camcorder setup. very tiny. and also some other tiny lil cam's. they work excellent for the cost. the glasses were $20 total, shipped. and its surprising the quality of video you get for 20 bones.... really. and they fit in the helmet as well....

and i didnt need a new one til the end of next year, the yellow one was just really Fast n Furious....
