Today i started in on the scirocco again. i pulled the motor and tranny. Went a bit rough as I originally was going to pull the motor and leave the tranny in, but i could not get the flywheel past the bell housing as there just wasnt enough room so i had to do a last minute switch and pull the tranny as well....only problem was the inability to get the passengers side axle unbolted untill i had the motor tranny way up in the air. I didnt remember to get the camera but ill try to remember tomorrow if i work on it again.

Nice gotta love the old rocco. I'll admit the Mk1 is my fav. over the mk2 8)

Sorry you threw a rod though and nice Scirrocco! I've also got 4 nice 3b pistons and rods if those do you any good. They're just hanging in the garage collecting dust.

The 5th rod is bent and broken. :D My mess looked nothing like yours though.

Today i pulled the head off of the block. There dosent seem to be any damage to the valves, at least at first glance. There is a little damage to the coresponding piston, but nothing to bad. I also discovered the issue that probably caused my piston failure. one of the coolant passages is blocked....pics:

worked on cleaning out the plugged coolant passage today, there was a lot of stuff in there and it looks like the head may have erroded away a bit on the right hand side.....pics:

The 3b pistons showed up yesterday (thanks again Chad :) ) and they look great, only issue (besides having the machine work done to the bearings) is that it looks like i'll have to loose the oil squiters which im a little bumed about but it should be ok as it is only going to be a street car with little to no track time.....here are some pics....

got a new motor today. Went to look at a few motors today. They were at this guy Pete Harris place over in belmont. He's got a pretty cool place, lots of VW's, hes building a SICK aircooled with a stretched hood and reloated rear doors, anyway since i didnt have a good vehicle to pick a motor up in i used my 90 with some boards and cardboard/rags/old blanket to get the motor in the rear seat. To get it to fit i to find out for sure that it was the 1.8 not a 2.0 I ended up taking the head off, he let me use his tools so it was not that bad.....then after i got it home i ended up dinging up the passengers side door panel, but all in all it survived pretty well. the motor is a bit rough but i think/hope it will clean up ok....on to the pics....

started tearing into the new block today. LOTS of rusty oily build up that actually came off pretty well with just the compressed air from the small compressor. I have to try to take the pistons/rods out tomorrow but got it pretty well stripped down except for that today. Also did a quick check of the orig head and found that at least one of the valves is ever so slightly bent i guess. They look fine but when a little diesel was added with the valves closed a slow drip from one of the intake valves...im debating trying to re seat the valve as i really cant afford to have the head rebuilt.....some pics:

Bill, you can use that clutch. If it's smaller, it was probably for the old transverse VWs with 200mm or 190mm disc.

Why not cut new skirt reliefs in the pistons and continue using the oil jets? I have built a couple of 8VT engines without jets, but that was because the block was not machined for jets. I would definitely cut skirt reliefs to continue using them. Get out the die grinder and go do it.

Id be worried about not having them balanced properly....i didnt run oil jets on my last turbo vw and it worked fine, I havea friend that was making 300whp and is probably closer to 4 now w/o them....i depends on t how you drive it.

had to fix the mower. The bolt kept backing out, so i threw a quick weld on it to keep it from happening again.

thats my dad sharpening them, he was doing it when i was taking pics of the bolt i welded in the middle, and yes the backhoe had the mower held up with some chains, we just had it tilted on the ground so we could fix it.

If you really want oil jets and are concerned about balancing, why not cut an oil jet relief template, then trace and cut the template on each piston? The skirts are pretty thin, so I doubt you could imbalance the pistons by any more than half a gram, if that, as long as you follow the template.

But I totally agree about oil jets. There are plenty of engines making lots of power without them. They really are a luxury item for most engines.

Some more progress, got the pistons/rods out of the donor block, they look really good. I think I am going to stick with the 16v rods, i was going to use the 3b rods, but the 16v ones feel much better and i dont think that the hole up center will make that much of a differnece with the whp i want to make....i think i will be happy with low to mid 2's. I am going to look for a t3 with at least a 60 trim preferable a .63.

now that I have the block all apart i have to hone the cylinder walls and would like to clean everything up in there, any advice on what to use to clean everything? techniques?

Today i swapped the 3b pistons onto the 16v rods. Then i went to take off th exhaust which turned out be all SS with no connections. So i had to cut it to get it off, and SS def eats 4" cut off wheels pretty quick. pic of the new piston/rod combo
