Hey, where is the dyno stuff from Battleborn. I didn't go, so I need to see something.

how much boost to make the 440? it sounded pretty powerful for 15 psi in that vid

According to Jim, that was at 24 psi. They put in some E85 and made 520whp.
Here is what Jim said on FB "
Marc Hank and I spend a bit of time on it Thursday mapping out the VVT, basic settings and such. Pump gas numbers were struggling to make 400 wheel on the dyno, I think we ended up around 420 or so at 24 psi. The dyno is reading really low after some load cells were replaced. It's a lot better than the baseline it arrived with which was 300 wheel. I took the car out to get more gas and it's fast for sure just in the pump tune but isn't taking much timing so we thing the CR is too high.
To make some power we threw in some E85 and jumped up to 520 wheel or so at the same boost. This feels closer to 600 wheel on the street, it's pretty freaked fast. So fast the first time I quick shifted into second it ripped the tires loose and there were a couple oh shit moments.
So a few things will happen. Definitely need valve springs. This turbo is just waking up at 24 psi, that limit must go. And might as well ask for cams for Christmas while I am in there. Finally I will CC everything and see exactly where we are for CR and put in a thicker head gasket.
Between all of that I'll start playing with water injection. Overall it's hard not to be happy with the way it's running. It's sounds absolutely insane."

I was in such a daze on Thursday that I can't remember exact numbers. Hank will send me the plots when he comes up for air, it was a long weekend.
We pulled out the spool valve to eliminate any possible restrictions, and even without it in there the car is a blast to drive.

Awesome work everyone! 520whp at 24psi is great. So you were hearing knock unless you pulled timing?
Difference in spool with/without valve?
Glad dad is doing springs and cams. Thanks for that!

Oh yes, the valve rocks. About 5-600 rpm, but the boost ramp is nice and linear instead of a steep exponential curve.

Hell yeah, that's awesome. I think an engine this complex with a spool valve, vvt, and w/m is definitely going to take a little more time to tune than a straight turbo/fuel setup car.

Would you still hear knock on e85?

Not really. It just stopped making power. This was also on ~e40. It doesn't take much ethanol to really wake these up.

so in summation, your 07k, on pump 91 (?) was limited to 24psi with reasonable timing, which made 420ish whp?

Unfortunately the calibration on the dyno isn't the same as my previous runs and it's reading very low across the board. I'd say the pump gas tune is almost on par with where my old setup was which isn't too surprising. Pump gas is pump gas and considering this motor might be a full two points higher in CR than the old one, it's pretty impressive.
91 octane is always a challenge, you have to have the motor spot on to take advantage of it. My old setup was there and it kicked butt. This new one is close but just need to figure out what it's going to need to get some timing back. Water injection will help and so will a thicker head gasket.
Also this project was all about power curve. The fact my power band is much wider with an 800hp turbo on the car is pretty badass.

I was not picking at all. I think really that sounds like it is on par with most engines in the world that are not the old 20vt.
The audi 20vt is a little freakish as far as how well it takes to high boost. And yes, there is a world of difference between 91 and 93 octane.
Have you ever done a cranking compression test on the engine to see what it pumps?

What a beast, quite the difference in cranking compression numbers. I'm sure your planned upgrades will wake it up even more!

Mahle power pack 9:1, but the deck height on the block was a little closer than expected. Had to run a TT-RS gasket to compensate, but I should have run the numbers again at that point.

oh I forgot - variable cam timing making high cranking numbers- right?
I drove a stock 07k in a rabbit and thought it felt flat like it was detuned from the factory. I bet it is a honey with a turbo on it for drivability though.
I bet cams would make one scream.

The cams are pretty terrible. It's half an R8/Lambo V10 if that tells you how much is left in just NA form.
I gave a friend a ride in the car for the first time tonight. Ruined him forever, now he is looking up focus RS pricing, lol.
He called it Cialis. Little yellow pill that gives you a boner.
