yeah, i pulled into the turn lane and it's a reeeeally long one, and the traffic was backed up to about halfway and all the lights were green and cars started flowing forward and i kept my speed to get up close to the guy in front so i could catch the light and he didn't go forward as i was slowing down, so i started slowing down as quickly as possible until the brakes locked. it wasn't a slam on the brakes lock, it was gradual until i couldn't make it go anymore and then slid about 8-10ft into his bumper and proceeded to destroy my lights, bumper, intercooler, cross brace, the leading edge of the hood, and a motor mount. the fenders are fine, one bumper shock compressed about an inch. the hood is still lined up properly but the core support is toast.

it sucks for sure. just a bad combo. i wasn't being stupid, just didn't start slowing down in time. lesson learned.... traffic and people suck :P

Derek, a note about making shitloads of camber via moving the strut towers in--

What this is going to do is make your kingpin angle go insane, which is going to really bork up your camber more and more as you turn the wheel. Your SLA comparison isn't quite the same as a strut, since arm length variations are then adjusted to keep the wheel in one spot/adjust camber. Google kingpin angle and steering axis inclination for more...what ends up happening is your inside tire leans into the corner, but the outside one gains POSITIVE camber as you turn...negating the camber you earn with castor. It also makes the steering heavier (since you end up having to lift the car when turning).

Edit: Ah, you're moving the low balljoint in an inch as well.

I'm sad to see my favorite 4kq in this state, but what I love about Derek is he's got the right attitude. I'm sure the fix will end up being another evolution in the car's buildup. I'd even donate some paypal if needed. Good Luck!

:stupid:

That was a squeaky clean car :( :( :( ... looks fixable

Did a similar thing to my beloved '84 GTI years ago.... but I was really drunk... cars failing to go for long time after light turned green... totaled the car by driving into... mostly under an old jacked up, rust bucket Econoline - both guys in the van spilled their beers!

1st big reason I've been driving (living) sober for 17+ years

tell yer grandma I'm sorry about her grab bar :P

Doh! Sorry to see that one Derek. I almost did something very similar a few days ago. Came down an exit ramp I take every day, going fairly quickly but romping on the Alcons a bit for the right hand turn at the intersection. The Toyota pickup at the GREEN light decided he needed to stop before turning right on a GREEN light with a GREEEN arrow. ABS activation and pucker factor commenced. Luckily I wasn't going that much faster.

Rebuild it, make it nastier! Buzz me if you run into parts that you can't find, European goodies.

thanks guys for the support. the car's sitting at the shop while i'm home here in oregon for a couple weeks and i'll decide what's going to happen in terms of repair and what'll get replaced with what. i'm not too tore up about it because of the fact that i was going to tear it apart anyhow, and it's just a piece of metal.... a special piece :P, but still a piece that can be replaced with another. life and limb are another story and that all seems to be intact, so we'll go from there.

Here's something I always thought would be cool. I've never tried to photoshop it but if you could graft the back of a CGT onto a 4kq and make a wagon out of it.. I think it could really look good. Especially with Ur flares.... of course you'd have to do some temporary damage to the back of your car as well...
