i have said it before but i am not a fan of those valves. they may lower boost threshold but i think it if for the wrong reasons and a flat wall in the exhaust stream can be very bad. i think that the bad outweighs the good.

Eh, we're not too concerned. Blowing up motors makes you learn :) It's what happens when you have to be the guinea pig. When you think about how it works, running with the QSV closed should only ever happen at low rpm where backpressure isn't an issue (and perhaps once on the dyno to show the difference). By the time you get to that point it should be open. Unfortunately it took us a long time to tune it and therefore would have had repeated WOT to redline pulls with it closed = not good. Plus there was a little while there where we didn't have the 044 in and the car was running lean.

In short, when working PROPERLY, this should not happen. There are 1100whp Supras that don't have this issue beacuse they were setup properly from the start.

Very true ... remember, properly does involve the right amount of $$ ... I want to set up my car for 300 AWHP but I don't have the $$ for it so it's not going to happen anytime soon.

Marcel, I think you should christen your car "The Stove", cause it's black like a cast iron stove,
and your determination is as strong as a cast iron stove!

With audi 20V 5 cill and power levels you guys r at, you shouldn’t be a guinea pig, those engines has been pushed lots further and they have been melted million times. It is up to you to learn from someone else mistakes (lots cheaper that way) or you can be stubborn and learn the stuff hard way (expensive and time consuming)

Well I just mean guinea pig in terms of the QSV is all. But yeah I see your point of learn from others' mistakes. I think when we do this the second time around it will be fine because we'll be running low boost until it's setup right.

Small update in other news... coated rod and main bearings are shipping from Marc tomorrow and we're picking up some inconel .5mm oversized exhaust valves as well. The couple random things I've read about sodium valves lately has kinda been disconcerting. Even though the valves in dad's head are essentially new, it just doesn't seem smart to have them in there waiting to drop at 30psi.

We're waiting on a quote from Dan on the pistons. 9A, 8.1:1 or 8.3:1 comp ratio, 82.5mm, coated tops

We've sourced a 92 EV block, so we'll be picking that up soon as well (next trip south to the big smoke)

It appears from the invoice that Marc may have sent .5mm over intake and exhaust valves. Whoops! I'll just convince dad it's not worth shipping them back ;)

we were going to get .5 over exhaust valves anyway. haven't arrived yet so we can't test yet but I'm assuming that there are intake and exhaust valves there based on the $

nope, the mixup was in the studs, for some reason I thought you wanted head and main studs as well. only exhaust valves in there as you requested. Your dad already emailed me, just bring back the studs and I'll credit the diff.

lalalala

So while waiting for things we do a lot of talking. I think we narrowed down what caused the det that destroyed the motor. It was before we got the 044 pump in there and the car was running lean. A few full throttle runs probably toasted the block early on and then (thanks to the coatings) lasted through while we tuned it but the damage was already done. I am sceptical about it being the QSV closed but that could have played a small part. One thing that Ed said stuck out to me when he was talking about tuning his car with Marc at Carlisle and running out of fuel - "if I was on pump gas, that motor would have now been in pieces" - or something along those lines. We definitely had more than one scary lean situation happen and my feeling is that's what did the motor in. Sad... :(

Anyway pistons are ordered from Wiseco and I think Hank's almost done with the fun v-band->t3 adapter so we'll get rolling on this thing soon! Just gotta finish a TDI first :P
