Figured 5am in the morning was too early for an accountant type.

We should have, but we have already taken quite a few hits from the family for neglect and that would have just compounded the problem.
Ok so I got home and was excited to move forward on the build. This is what I came home with and what was on the front step that had been delivered. Just like Christmas. Pay attention to everything being v-banded.

I wanted to run stainless AN lines for water, oil, and fuel. The problem is coming up with adaptors to do just that. Here is a partial list of the solutions that we came up with. Most of these solutions involved cutting steel AN/AN fittings on the lathe, and welding these fittings to the cut off OEM hose ends.
I also traded Hank a 7A valve cover for this previously vented cover that has since been superceded by his current system.

Cut some new gaskets for a few pieces that need to be cleaned up now before install.

All in all a very productive week, especially since I was away from the project for four of the last 6 days.

Off with the old, for now, and in with the new. I have every intention of running this car with the EFR turbo when it arrives along with this log manifold, but for now it gets a slight upgrade while His Urq sits in the corner mumbling to himself.
The new old.

And in with the new.....well almost. It hit on the bracket that is on the frame rail that was used for the CIS. I probably could have loosened the motormounts and jacket up the engine, but just to show some people that I am capable of cutting on an old Urq, I opted to cut into my new red paint and delete that obstacle.

Deleted, but still needs to be touched up with some paint.

And installed for the first time.

With turbo installed.

A shot from above to get a better view of turbo placement. I will probably just run a big elbow and filter like the fabbed pictures show for now, but would like to make more of a RR typo filter box in the corner for the EFR.

With downpipe and wastegate installed.

With the charge pipe just kind of laid in there. I still need a 3" to 2.5" silicone hose for the throttle body and will need to come up with some anchor points on the pipe. We'll see.

I'm still missing some v-clamps and odds and ends, will need to do some slight massaging to get everything acceptable to the wife,

but I like the direction and look so far. It should at least get me going until the original plan shows up. Again, thanks Hank!! You really do some awesome welding and fab work. I always thought that I would do all this work, but because of time and because it wouldn't have looked as nice if I would have done it I took this route. I like the outcome.

The only thing I like about this build is cutting off the CIS bracket ;o]

Wow, that's beautiful! It makes me excited because I should be receiving something like your "With downpipe and wastegate installed." pic very soon from Hank. That gave me a very nice preview of what to expect

I can't wait until I have the time to make my car and all of its parts as clean as you have.

It's a small get together/bbq/cruise. Should be a good time for those who can make it. It was me that grabbed the CAT. Looked like you guys were hard at work! Yes, next time, at BBQ right?

Here is a cool shot of your setup dad..

Nice Hank. I wish that we had the cold side housing to see how close it comes to the log manifold. I like how the hotside offsets in towards the manifold on the exit. I should make for a nice clean path for the downpipe. What I'm worried about is that I'm going to have to run a spacer to bring the cold side out enough to not hit. That would have brought the hotside exit further out also and unlike your header it wouldn't be angled to point towards where the downpipe should go. The hotside looks good though.

I'm sure glad you didn't use the H word. That was always a bad, banned, next to cuss word in our home. Do you like the cutting off of the bracket because it violated the new paint job or because it will be that much harder to ever go back to stock and CIS? I don't think there is much chance that is going to ever happen, but maybe I'll keep that cut off portion just in case I need to weld it back on. Even I could weld that well.

I wouldn't worry about where you cut your paint John because you're gonna want to put a heat blanket there anyway. Seriously envious John.

You are right Sean, but it will be touched up before the blanket goes over it.

http://www.full-race.com/articles/efrturbotechbrief.pdfIt is a great read too! Most likely, you will have the outlet of the cold side pointed towards the oil cooler, and it will then all fit nice and dandy.
Looks good in there Dad! It was great spending time with you at the Lab this couple of days.

I have tried to get him to go forward facing, but the oem in him takes over I guess!
I don't think my Dad mentioned it, but that turbo is an HTA billet 3076r. That is a 60lb per minute turbo, or good for about 600hp!! I can't wait to drive this car!!

Just because the turbo is good for those kind of numbers doesn't mean that's where they will be. To begin with I only have #60 injectors and in this config will be running the stock I/C. Although I have a spare 016, I would rather not be at that tranny munching level. I would be more inclined to think about it if, instead of a spare 016, I had the TDI 01e with 389 gears that fell through. Oh well, she doesn't need more than 400whp. Lol

John,
I hate to say it, but your stock intercooler is not going to have a chance even at 400hp. Now man up,
cut the front a little and upgrade that intercooler, while Hank is in tig mode.
Just my 02 cents.
Very nice though.
Cheers,
Craig

Ha Ha.....I know you are right and I know that something has to be done, but in the time frame that I have and seeing that this is just a temporary solution until the planned turbo setup arrives, I am going to try to get by. You think that just because I got brave and cut the new paint already that now I'm ready to cut the core support? I think that I will at least try to get it running, the engine broke in, decently tuned and past the GTG before I worry about I/Cs. If I go front mount, then the intake should be forward facing and better flowing and it doesn't take long before I'm out of the grocery getter DD and running up the heals of the plan for the track oriented car. I have to have some differences besides license plates.
