Matt wrote:I'm kinda worried about the pieces that are between the bolts and where the strut bearing sits. They look awfully thin. I suppose the block that holds the upper bearing is nearly the full width of the box though...
that is correct... the blocks are fully supported around the edges. the thin strips are just so the bolts are tighted with pressure only on one side.... knowhutimean Vern?
and yes, a strut tower bar is planned 8)

I dunno how the engineering/forces work out, but I'd want some grade-A finest-of-the-fine washers under the bolts to distribute load...I'm with Matt, those look way too thin.

do you have no confidence in me?! oy! the bolts i had with the big fat washers on them weren't long enough, so i grabbed a couple old driveshaft bolts and they thread all the way through the bottom of lower block like i wanted.
yes, i will put washers... and NO those thin strips aren't load bearing..

Driveshaft bolts just ought to do it!

Looks great Derek! Fantastic work as usual.
Did you check tire clearance turning the wheel lock-to-lock.
I guess if you don't run fender liners, it should be ok.

:o .. wow that looks tough.. anyone have any info on it?
Funny thing is i've had that image for a long time saved away, as reference for the direction i'm most likely going with my coupe! I would like info on it too. As you saw the only thing i'm told is there used to be details online, and they stole flares from an M3. Not the way i would do it but definitely nothing wrong with it!
Congrats on the front mock up!

Wow. Just wow.
Fenders on that S2 are e46 M3. For the life of me, I cannot find a website with a write up, but it's not rocket science...
Great work Derek!

Great work Derek!
true true.. i have an imagination and already surfed for some M3 fenders as a backup plan. i think i can get this going first and see how my clearances are in real world driving. standard E46 fenders have a decent flare to them and might be just the trick if more clearance is needed down the road.... unless of course i come across a full set of UR goodies

you have an amazing ability to "come across" stuff like that... I absolutely LOVE the look of the UR fenders on the 4k, in my opinion it is the best looking mod you can do to a 4k second would be euro lights.

I've thought the idea of a 4000/SQ would be awesome. Not only could you have a sweet car, but you could have a backseat that is usable. I wonder how a 4kQ would look SQ'd with a CGT rear window/trunk. Anybody got skillz in Photochop?

NO! no hatchbackin' thing on my car... .. ugh! *shivers*. i like the sedan look like it is. i really like the proportioning of the car as it is.. but UR fenders, bumpers, and side skirts would be pretty hawt...
but then again, so is this...

i slipped the bumper on after some more measuring and double checking..
here's the skinny.. the pics i took last night of the wheel was with too much negative camber, so the top of the wheel was just within the wheel well... sooooo, today i was doing more double checking of my work here, and found it to be out about 3/4-1" further outward.
next order of bidness is axles lengths combined with transmission width. the width from the inside of the bearing in the hub, from hub to hub, is about 53-53.5"... the 90q 20v axles i planned to use with the 01E trans comes out to approximately 54".... i think each side could budge .25", but not when i have to move the hubs in an additional 1-1.25" for wheel clearancing.... what to dooo... *thinks reallllll hard*.....
TIP #1. NEVER THROW ANYTHING AWAY....
i once threw out some axles in a clean up and i'm kicking myself for it, but i had a few things laying around to build what i need for shorter axles.
the A8 parts car i have is an auto... and they are WIDE units(meaning shorter axles), so i start disassembling them to measure up and see how they might work... huh... 1.5" shorter, perfect... except, that the outer CV's are the rather large units of all the big chassis cars, and on the A8 the tone ring for the ABS and the portion of the CV that it sits on is too large to fit in the 90 hub/spindle.... crap... wait, i wonder if the 200 CV's would fit... break one out.. YES! it'll fit with a teeny bit of clearancing inside the hub like i did on my zermatt car.
that's one half of the problem... the inner joints on an A8 are the 130m tripod units... much different flanges than the stock 01E units.. hmm, oh, wait.. my TDI 6spd trans i put in my A6 had those flanges! they are sitting at home in the garage!
man, talk about loving audi for parts bin sharing. i have two more of the auto axles from my A6 at home as well that i'll bring back down and measure to see if i can use one, otherwise i'll need one pass. A8 front axle.
and this is the reason i say don't throw stuff out.. well, not unless you plan on doing stupid things like me

the sexiest thing is the fact that under the stock body you are fitting 10 inches of rim and loads of tire where before only 225's were possible......
finish this and then do the s1 fenders and fit 14 inchers

A comment on your control arms. Don't use a rod end at the upright. It will snap at the threads. The forces out there is so large that for a rod end to work, it'll have to be humungus. Go spherical bearing - you don't need adjustability in that end if you can adjust the control amr at the SF instead. People have tried what you are attempting now before and in some cases they ain't trying anything ever again due to snapped rod ends....

thank Henka 8) i'm finding that the outer 3/4" rod end isn't having enough travel for my desired setup... so i'm probably going to have to revert to standard ball joints just for simplicities sake.
