Ferrea is a nice alternative to 034.

Are you referring to the valves or their spring retainers? I didn't realize the retainers also came in that material. Actually Im unsure if that's a brand or a material (pretty sure material) as of the posting of this lol

Ok it's obviously a brand.... but 034 was $45 cheaper than nolimitmotorsports.com when I added the 20 set. I'll look some more. I can almost feel it in my bones that this is valve float in one cylinder at the very least. It feels like the power of 4 cylinders when I mash it about 5k rpm vs how it was before. Used to really rip :( That clatter last night almost makes me 98% sure of it.

I have a question now. If I went with the high rate 034 springs and spring retainers, would I need the titanium valve retainers or any other parts to complete the job reliably?

Heres my MAT table if that helps.

Also heres part of a log from yesterday showing the timing above the threshold of boredom (above 5k).

See where it still appears to hover at a certain RPM before moving upward, in the log anyways?

Heres the log excert saved. I dont think it literally hovers on the tach. I will try to watch the tach when I do a similar pull today. Makes me wanna puke looking at the RPM charter.

It would be a good time to just rebuild the head, really. You're already in there, and it would suck to go back in for a leaking valve stem or a pooched lifter.

I agree. If valve stems can be done from above like I think they can then I'll do those too. Several months ago I had the head mostly redone when the HG blew. We got 2 new valves, valve seals and guides. All lifters remain original though. I'll have to see what's up with the comp test before I jump in to do the springs etc.

My tach literally stops at 5100 RPM when this is happening. Its more precisely shown on VEMS but it stands still on my dash. Whyyyyyyy?!

Trigger errors? Have you ran a trigger log during a pull?

Yeah I'm fairly certain this is not a head issue. Can you also hear the Rpm hang or does it go up like normal?

I know right! I looked at the green bars for ALS (off) and the trigger error indicators and they say green for all good when I look at the log. I will do that trigger log next though. Can't believe I haven't yet... I guess it's possible that the indicator bar above the logs won't show anything unless the actual trigger log is consulted. Will do tonight.

Chris, I am uncertain if the engine is continuing to rev as it feels so gradual getting to the slowdown that I don't feel a forward jerk of any kind when it happens. It's almost as if it's still going but very slowly accelerating compared to anything below 4800 rpm. I need someone to do a ride along I think. It's tough in erie to drive and watch vems at the same time at that rpm.

Im putting this trigger log up not because I beat on the engine while recording it, but because it shows 755 errors at the bottom of the analysis window if Im reading it correctly. Can anyone confirm that its losing the secondary trigger elevated rpms? I will order new sensors pronto if thats what this indicates as an issue. Or maybe I need to clean off the flywheel teeth or something?

Didn't you say you had a long bolt in the vr sensor housing?

Don't worry I'm not big enough of a moron to not stack a bunch of washers on the bolt. I made it stock length on the threaded end using washers I had so as not to rip the FW pin or teeth off with it. I didn't add any spacers to the sensors though so they are at the correct distance still. Could dirty FW teeth cause a signal loss at high RPM maybe? When the distributor was leaking into the top of the bellhousing for forever I think I saw some dried oil and grime on a few FW teeth a week ago. My sensors are original on the bellhousing as well. I think VEMS recommends brand new ones in a PSA for audi people lol

Thing is, the primary and secondary triggers were perfect when starting up the car. They gradually lost signal on the seconday one I think it was as I increased RPM and drove longer.

So what the heck is a CRC error here?

Heres the trigger log from today with spare sensors installed:

I see like 150 less CRC errors but I dont remember how long of a log time-wise each are.
This is the log screen pull where you can see the PRM's sweep upwards again correctly (top row in black):

Olds sensors, look like they were beat with rebar. I forgot how beat up they were I guess:

Good call :) much relief here

Recommend buying new sensors anyway? I'm just not sure about those CRC errors and if they're mostly acceptable. I saw one linked in another thread here recently that needed shimmer for being 1mm to long. Is that one a good bet still?

On a side note, how the heck do I remove the heatshield on the passenger side beneath the turbo? It blocks access to the last engine mount I want to change :guns:

Thanks I'm pretty happy with the outcome as well. Also, it's difficult to beat FREE for a horrible driveability problem as the 2 spare sensors are easily worth about $450! That was a nice reward for buying the parts car. I got my $500 purchase price back many times over with that car. Been a good DIY week.

Now I just need to get that last motor mount out. I saw 2 bolts on that heatshield. I hope there aren't any others hidden away.

I hope you're getting that $450 figure from the stealership... they should be about $100 new online.
