Yes Myke. It is a reasonable question. Thing is, at idle, it is not as bad as 3k... I abuse the motor a bit and get it to put out hte usual lifter symphony. I think a couple of them are just bum lifters at this point. Either that or 034 casted a spell on my motor knowing I promised myself I would put a new cam gear on it next time the head came off!

Mufflers?! Who needs mufflers? That's what a turbo is for! Hank, did you stay with a steel downpipe?

Yes, A stainless downpipe that terminates behind the axle with a flex coupler

Think the aluminum wouldn't be up to downpipe temps?

I know that drag guys use them all the time, but I do not ever see them on road cars at all. I see 1200 out of the turbo all the time, which is right at aluminums Melting temp depending on the grade. At the bottom of the dp, the wideband see's 800 at WOT, and that is the gas stream. It will start to get soft around 1000C, and I think it would have to be a texas mile type situation to even dream of being a problem down there.
The interesting thing with the new setup, the exhaust itself is very cool when compared to the old steel setup, but the exhaust tips get pretty toasty after running hard. The aluminum absorbs a tremendous amount of heat.

UUUgggh That exhaust sounds good compared to the lifter noise. That's a bummer. Like Myke says, you sure youre getting oil up there?

I had 2 or 3 bad out of my initial 20 (also lightweight). Replaced them and everything was fine.

How in the heck can you pinpoint the bad ones? yikes
Hank, have you had the car up to full temp and under load? i have see instances where they dont quiet down until the thermostat on the oil opens up...

Will a benchtop pressing of them reveal the pooper?

For mine, I could compress them by hand (finger), an 1/8" give or take, whereas the good ones wouldn't budge.
Bad one:

WHAT?!! Is this a common occurance with the LW vag lifters?

Lifter tick has actually gone down quite a bit. I think there are a couple of them that are faulty. I'll probably order some and tear it down to fine the bad ones..
HTA 35r plus e85 plus 26psi is fun!!!! I am getting a misfire up there though, and I am thinking it is ignition related.

:woowoo: Lookin good! I hope the lifter noise goes away, or is easily fixed!!! Sounds great Hank!!!

Mine took forever to quite down. BTW, I hate you and your E85.

He can't.....wants his new/used torsen 016 to last at least 500 miles. I'm going up there this weekend and he has offered to let me go "thrash it" some. I hope he already has the 500 on it by then.

Well, just so that cams aren't out on the bench when you get there it'll all be good. It's not like you have to get even with him for breaking any of your stuff right?

uhhh... 4kq axles are just not going to hack it in the rear.... I'll load a picture tomarrow, but they are a little twisty.
I am getting a bad miss at 24psi though. It is only boost sensitive, as the trigger is rock solid to 8500. I changed plugs, upped the dwell as much as I could ( about 80% Duty Cycle, dunno if that is safe or not), and looked extensively at timing to make sure it wasnt a bad miss. I wish I had a new set of coils on hand to check. I'll have to see what the resistance is on them. WHat is the resistance suppose to be?
I love torsen with locked rears, and a fast rack. It is nice to be able to shift mid slide with out having to have a second hand on the wheel.

i wanted to hear about the rear axles and your swap... What your Dad was telling me about it just didn't seem normal from all the 4k diff swaps I had heard of - including the one in my car...

Uh. Why is there no video of this supposed 26 psi and E85?!?!?
Prove it!!!

Nothing special. The 4kq rear diff is back there with the 4kq rear axles. The shaft does not look any different from the URQ Shafts, but the CV's are obviously smaller.

Isn't that just the best? You can get some nice powerslides with that setup. Miss it so much!

yes it is Martin

I am thinking perhaps a torsen rear would be more friendly on half shafts..

That is the part that makes me scratch my head. I had always thought that you just swapped out the diff flanges from 4k to the larger UrQ / 5k like when you do the tranny swap. Then you continue to run the original axle / CV combination...
So, I guess Im now wondering what is under my car since it has 4:11's...
