So im new to quattro and im still learning to launch from a dead stop. I plan on one day getting launch control, but till then i gotta learn to do it with out.
I was wondering if anyone could give me some pointers or what method they use?
Thanks in advance!

Last time I launched by dumping the clutch i lost first gear.
I haven't done it since...

i hold my clutch and gas to the floor. my ECU pulls timing (i leave fuel in for aggressiveness and boost building, no really its for the cool fire) and it builds boost. then i slip the clutch out at hardly ever just the RIGHT amount and zoom there i go. my ecu reads wheel speed from the VSS output in the trans, and when it sees 5kph it automatically rises to the standard rev limiter (which is around 9400 IIRC).
it seems to work for me, my best 60' was 1.400 sec. best 0-60 was just under 2.3 seconds.
i am only in it for the fire though....
when i would dump it too fast all 4 wheels would come off the ground. it was not good. cool maybe, but not good.

Right foot pinned and side step the clutch. I've had good luck trying to rev through the clutch dump, like let revs sit at 5k, go WOT and try to dump it right before it gets to red line. That helped me build a little more boost and bog a little less at the drag strip before I had LC setup.

So would it be better to just save up for a launch control setup?

If you get a little practice in you can launch them pretty hard without it, but like Phil said you can shred a trans doing it even without LC

i've launched every quattro i've owned and they all like it just fine. Basically I pin it and dump the clutch right as the revs get into the middle of the power band. You can usually get a decent launch without launch control on a car with a smallish turbo.
The best launcher I had was my gt28rs a4. It was just so planted and the turbo was small enough that it would stay on boost once the wheelspin stopped.

Well I've tried doing a few launches but it was really boggy then it would pull. I did them with the stock 5 psi, I haven't tried it now that its doing 14 psi. What do you mean by "pin it?"

pin it=gas pedal on floor. I dont let it bounce off the rev limiter, just let it rev to the point where its fast enough to break the tires loose. Might take a couple tries to get it right, some vehicles require more abuse to get to this point.

Ok I'm just making sure I understand what your saying completly so I don't go break something. Ill give it a few more trys when I get the chance. Thanks for the tips!

you might break something, I never have broken anything launching, but it surely can happen.
like most things, No risk=no reward

Yeah im aware of the risk, but I gotta learn to launch somehow. Have you ever heard of people launching with the differential lock on?

Probably safer to run no diff locked. It'll allow the tire with less traction to spin, allowing for more give instead of more break.

Good to know! I had just read an other thread were people were arguing about it, but never gave clear answers

In a dozen or so launches the best results I have had are by attempting to hold the revs at about 6k rpm or so after getting staged then simultaneously flooring the gas and letting out the clutch at the second yellow light. With the center torsen and open rear the most wheel spin that I can get is a little tiny chirp. With the squatty stock suspension the launch reminds me of a powerful ski boat coming up on plane. If the nose drops then I kow that I did something wrong. My best 60' time is 2.15 seconds. I bet that I could shave off .3 seconds just by stiffening up the suspension.

My best advice, load up the Trans a little by slipping the clutch slightly just before dropping it. That will go a long way to saving the Trans.

Ill keep that in mind, at least now I have a few new things to try out. Thanks!

Yarp, this for me has given me some pretty hilarious launches more so that the car is running correctly. I do have lower miles on my car 131k but I do use the clutch a lot in a launch situation… also I wouldn't recommend dumping the clutch over 5000rpms. I have found in my lower Hp/Tq the higher RPM you dump it at the better chance you have to bog and not take off well. Reason being the car wants to be doing a certain MPH if you have traction in a certain gear and the clutch is out. This is where slipping the clutch helps because you are in a way regulating the initial drivetrain shock.
The only other thing I would also say is it helps a ton if you give a quick rev or two to about 4/5k before WOTing. This helps get the flywheel up to speed and seems to help get off the line.

The link isnt working, but is that the video on your thread? Ive tried dumping the clutch at high Rpms but it bogged. Give it it a few revs dont sound lije a bad idea.

Hmm. I'm gonna have to practice some launching. Loading up the trans is a good idea. I have no spare 016s. But I do have a handful of 01es...

My entire point is that you don't want to launch in high rpms in a low power car. Because you don't have enough power to create wheel spin your car will bog every goddamn time because 5000RPM is 20-30 MPH, which you won't be achieving in the time you dump the clutch. So if you try to start slipping the clutch at around 4000RPM then WOT as you let out, you'll have enough time to get what MPH you should be traveling in that gear(Think of it like a fixed gear bike). Also this helps load all weight to the rear tires and it just squats. I have a picture somewhere of me launching up slight hill and you could put a hand under the front right wheel (This was with stock suspension) I think our chassis flex really helps with the car hooking up so well too in the stock form.
Also chaloux don't forget the launches Nick was doing with his 016 right around 400wtq+ (Estimated) those were brutal and he was fine all damn day it seemed. The general consensus is 415wtq and the 016 2nd gear snaps (Read this on this forum) Other than that they are pretty brick shit houses.
It takes getting used to but start lower with rpms and just work upwards.
At the track this gets even worse because they set the road up for GRIP, which sadly we don't need.
First time at the track I ran a 14.6 and a 14.3 in the 1/4
After that I pumped up the winter I had tires to 43 psi to try to get them to slip and used the method above - I ran a fucking 13.8 on a stock k24 with a TAP chip and a modified WG spring. I did take out my back seat and spare tire and run the car super low on fuel, but still the being able to launch without bogging took almost a half second off my time, pretty wild.

I undertsand that I don't have that kind of power.....yet. I figured it out the first timed I tried it. I actually tried loading up the tranny afterwards. I recall a buddy from high school mentioned that he had to ride the clutch a bit before going WOT on his awd talon. I just wanna say thank you! I really appriciate the time you take to answer my questions, giving me advice and tips!

5k rpm, preload, ease out as it grabs, WOT for the remainding 1.5k rpms and bam you're already in 2nd gear....
