07k longitudinal swap

New on here, been lurking for a while. Deciding on swap on my b5. Right now its between an 07k and a 3.6 vr6. Leaning towards an 07k just because its cheaper. And fits better lighter more support etc.

Need to decide on which exact 07k to get. Couple of questions. My line of thinking is based on 1.8t built on oem parts and aftermrket rods.

Target: 450awhp 93 and 550awhp meth

(Questions are random and just type as i go along)

1. At what power does the cast crank break? I've only read of one 700 iirc. Not sure if fluke or it really breaks at higher levels.

2. Is there any hardware difference between the CBT and CBU or is it just software?

3. Are the stock bore pistons, drop in for low mileage engines (less than 10k miles)?

4. Arp bolts - do the mains and head need Arps or will the stock ones be fine?

5. Who sells Mahle pistons?

6. Are valves and valvesprings necessary for 8krpm and whatever boost 550 needs?

7. How much power can a stock block hold?

8. Flywheel / starter- iroz or 1.8t 240m? - more concerned with starter config

9. Ecu - any preference?

10. Cluster - how to make tach work?

11. Are there any cheap cast manifolds that fit a longitudinal. Yup not ideal, but 1.8t have been making good power on cast log manifolds.

12. Intake manifold. Who sells flanges or longitudinal manfolds?

13 ac and ps. Which early models had them? I'm leaning towards te cbt/cbu just because they have both ac/ps and are available with very low mileage. But forged crank could change things a bit.

14. Rod crank bearings - is there any specific one that works better or will stock do?

15. Any problems arise after cutting the top bolts of an 01e?

16. How long does Iroz usually take to make and ship parts?

Is there a way to get a short runner intake to work with the PS pump. Like a PS pump bracket that has both AC and PS.

All good questions, I'll answer what I can

1. At what power does the cast crank break? I've only read of one 700 iirc. Not sure if fluke or it really breaks at higher levels.

Not sure, I wasn't willing to risk it when the forged bottom ends are out there.

2. Is there any hardware difference between the CBT and CBU or is it just software?

3. Are the stock bore pistons, drop in for low mileage engines (less than 10k miles)?

Yes, especially with the Mahle pistons

4. Arp bolts - do the mains and head need Arps or will the stock ones be fine?

Head studs for sure, mains are good, but not necessary. You have to have the block line honed if you use them.

5. Who sells Mahle pistons?

Iroz, INA

6. Are valves and valvesprings necessary for 8krpm and whatever boost 550 needs?

Yes, I ran into a wall at 26 psi regardless of RPM. It's a must in my opinion

7. How much power can a stock block hold?

Not sure if anyone has found that limit yet, over 1000 hp so far

8. Flywheel / starter- iroz or 1.8t 240m? - more concerned with starter config

Iroz, or get the welder out and modify your own starter.

9. Ecu - any preference?

Vems has support for VVT and local support

10. Cluster - how to make tach work?

11. Are there any cheap cast manifolds that fit a longitudinal. Yup not ideal, but 1.8t have been making good power on cast log manifolds.

Make your own if you want a log :) Iroz has off the shelf headers that are top notch proven

12. Intake manifold. Who sells flanges or longitudinal manfolds?

Iroz again,

13 ac and ps. Which early models had them? I'm leaning towards te cbt/cbu just because they have both ac/ps and are available with very low mileage. But forged crank could change things a bit.

14. Rod crank bearings - is there any specific one that works better or will stock do?

Stock Crank, clevite coated rods

15. Any problems arise after cutting the top bolts of an 01e?

Nope, Audi sport did this BTW to reduce swap times

16. How long does Iroz usually take to make and ship parts?

I would get on the list so he can include you in the next batch. If you don't end up using something, you have a part that people want, but may not be in stock :)

gilbobo on here made his own short runner, so it's possible, not sure what his setup looked like, there are lots of pics in his thread. The reasoning behind the long runner like mine is it's a better runner setup than you could ever make on your own. Packaging isn't great, but it's a fantastic setup with tuned velocity stacks and all..

Thanks for the reply. Very informative. Did I understand this correctly, you or gilbobo have an sri that works with both AC and PS?

Couldn't find "gilbobo". What's his username on here?

6. Both valves and valvesprings? or will stock valves work? Are they solid or sodium filled?

7. I meant completely stock engine. Want to boost it and get things working right before I spend more money/time on building it for decent power.

11. Don't prefer log, prefer cast just because it's cheaper and, arguably, more durable. But I'm fine with tubular, probably gona make a shorty tubular. Space and time/cost thing.

I run electric PS and water pumps, no AC. I am running stock valves, the exhaust are sodium filled. Not sure the limits of the stock motor, with e85 it would be fine, I would not risk any detonation with it and take out an expensive turbo for example.

Here is Jim's thread on MG under glibobbo21. http://www.motorgeek.com/viewtopic.php?t=17537

Thanks again. I guess electric ps is the only solution for an sri.

Sri? I love the mr2 pump. It's loud but not having to deal with power steering components up front is sooo nice.

Short runner intake or basically any normal straight intake.

Finally found this thread, I think it should be made into a sticky for future reference.
